Modifying the ff8 engine???
« on: 2003-08-19 05:44:03 »
I'm not sure if this is possible but...

If it were possible..

Could someone modify the ff8 engine and change... just about everything? (music, models, text, maps, etc)...

If it could be done... It would be alot easier to remake ff7 on the ff8 engine (I think it is the same engine, but ff8 looks alot better [optimized version of the engine?])... The battle models for ff7 could be re-animated for world mode in ff8.. and if the maps were to be changed, well, I'd start playing ff7 again...

The reason I don't play it now : I get to the end of disc 1 and get sick of it, I honestly like ff8 a bit more than 7... I'm not asking to be flamed about it though. I have a right to my opinion as you have a right to yours.

You also have the right to be flamed without warning, humiliated and banned.

Actually, your only likely to get a mild flaming here but still.

STILL.........

And I'm sure what your talking about is possible... however the Qhimm addicts/coders are all lazy bastids haha. Or are busy.

If you get sick of it after the first disc, what good is it to you? Are you saying you dont like ff7 because of the map, or what?

Sure hate to hear your comments about FF6, if you judge a game on looks, alone.

Hey guys, calm down!

As for the topic:

How do you image "modifying" the FF8 engine? In assembler code? Oh, dude, that'd be an impossible-to-do-in-lifetime-job ...
That's the reason why ficedula decided to write a new engine - it is less work and it is more up-to-date, since we are able to use the latest hardware accelerator abilities in our own engine.
BTW: Our hackers are mainly working on FF7, not on FF8. So AFAIK, no one of us have tried to disassemble the FF8.exe trying to modify it...

Thanks alhexx...but...

How far is the remake in progress?

I'm sure I could help with something :). Whether it be the story or somethin small, such as testing.

I picture modifiying the FF8 engine as in... changing maps, character models... sort of like a "mod" or a total conversion type thing... I'd still like to play it either way.

As for the other posts,

I just get tired of ff7's story, the graphics aren't -THAT- bad. I just don't like the world/field map character models :).

I think there's been a misunderstanding. The Remake Project is for FF7, not 8. Sorry, but we don't know of anybody who is working on a FF8 Remake.
For awhile halkun wanted to port its 3D models to Quake 3 and make an FF8 movie with them, but that project has been cancelled.

As for the FF7 Remake, it's doing ok. You're welcome to apply for some sort of position (talk to The SaiNt), but I kind of doubt we'd easily accept somebody who didn't even bother to finish the game.

It wasn't that I didn't bother, things always come up when I'm at the end of an ff game.

Right now in FF8 I'm in the final area,
With ff7 I got to the final battle and had to format (pc gave me a few problems)
With ff9 I couldn't get into the game.

I wanted to finish ff7 but on the 4th time going through the 1st disc, I'm getting a bit tired of it :)

Only the 4th time through?

I've replayed most of it 4 times and I'm on the fifth time, I've almost finished it LOL!

I believe that FF8 is based loosely on FF7's engine. The background images aren't too bad to decode to an extent, though I'm almost done with that.  The reason FF8 'looks' better is FF7 only uses textures on the eyes mouth and a few other places for the characters.  FF9 has the best looking graphics of the bunch, but I finished FF9 and have only been playing it to figure out the save state information lately. FF8 I should finish (as I am on disc 3 got all the toys to have fun with save EDEN and ultimate weapon maybe I should ge those.. hmm).

Back to the engine thing, the remake has a new engine but it's compatibile with the old data.  It's a prequel I believe too :)

Fice is really busy I understand so..
battle scenes for the remake (I can think of a lot of fun stuff to do suddenly).  I need to finish getting through the script information too (there seems to be a lot of script data I have yet to decode).

Ahh well always something to play with :)
