Question about FF8configurator
« on: 2004-06-28 17:43:45 »
Hi everybody !

First of all, I'm French so please forgive me if my English is not that great  :P

Now, my question... There is something I don't understand about FF8Configurator. I installed Samuel's DLS soundfont with its music set, and did the same with the orchestral DLS and music set. So I have both DLS in the left column and both addons in the right column. I have put the orchestral addon on the top and Samuel's one below.

I thought that way I could have all the normal musics AND the orchestral versions of the only songs that have been rearranged...
But it doesn't work... When I choose the orchestral DLS, I get the 5 songs rearranged and everything else is bad. And when I choose Samuel's DLS, it's these 5 songs that are bad.

I don't know if I make myself clear ! But I hope someone will be able to help me  :D
Thanks.

The reason why, is because the orchestral DLS is built on-top of the Original DLS that came with the game, and its instrument numbering structure is somewhat different than how Samuel's DLS is.

Furthermore, that same reason is also why the music files for each DLS are not compatible with each other -- they are trying to refer to instruments in places where they do not exist.

Yes, I had understood that. But it means there is no way to actually play with the orchestral version ? Since almost every song isn't compatible with the orchestral DLS, it's unplayable...
Too bad, the battle music sounds really great with it...   :weep:

There is a way, but.....you'd have to take the orchestral recordings from the Orchestral DLS and merge them into Samuel's DLS, and then if necessary edit the .sgts that came with the Orchestral DLS so that they reference the correct instruments (in case the default numbers they use are already used by instruments in Sam's DLS and thus had to be changed in order to merge the two together properly.)

Ok, thanks for your help. I won't do it myself, I don't have any skills for it.

I'm glad to see that there is still an active community around FF7 and FF8 here, I have been able to find a lot of useful info and tools (FF7Music PSF, FF8 soundfonts...) from here.
So thanks everyone
