Hello all. I've just discovered this message board and it seems like a great place to solve any Final Fantasy VII problems.

Okay, here's my problem.
When I don't have this site's Hi-Res patch installed, the game looks fine, but the in game text is all garbled and ugly.

When I do have the Hi-Res patch installed, the text looks great, but a grid of squares is visible on screen. The game is playable and looks great when you don't take into account the grid.

I'd like to know if there's any way to get rid of that grid (AA problem?). Or if there's no fix, I'd like to know if the garbled text can be fixed.

You should post your system specs

In the config program have u tried alternating between riva or TNT in display settings.

Depending on your graphics card drivers you could try manually forcing off AA.

With my video card, boosting all graphics options (in the video card configurators) to maximum worked.

I have a Nvidia FX 5200 video card. My drivers are the latest from the Nvidia website.

Both the Riva and TNT settings make the game crash at the start, so I play with neither.

I actually have tried several AA settings with Riva Tuner. The grid is always there (I haven't tried ALL of the settings, just a few). Turning AA off completely ruins the graphics.

I'll try boosting the graphics options and keep you posted on the results. In the mean time any help is welcome.

I couldn't get it to work with the hi-res patch, so I've given up on that for the moment.

But what about the messed up in game font? What causes that? Do the 8-bit palletized textures have anything to do with it? It says pass in the configuration so I figured that couldn't be it.

I have a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra, so, this shouldn't be too terribly different than what you have to do...

First, go into RivaTuner.

Go to the Direct3D tweaks.

Next, go to the Textures tab.

Under Texture format settings, uncheck "Enabled 8-bit palettized textures"

Click okay, restart your computer if it asks you to.

Then, open up the FF7 Config.

Select 640x480 Full Screen.
Check the NVIDIA box, and mark the TNT option.

That should take away the gridlines for you. It did for me.

Yeah, that did the trick.
I actually tried this before, but when I set it to TNT, the game would crash at the start. I don't know what's different now, but it works.

You wats funny, I had the high resolution woking without the need of rivaturner, then some other day i uninstalled the game, then installed it again sometime later and that annoying grid thing appeared.  so i was forced use rivaturner and disable 8-bit palettized textures which can be annoying to enable and disable when playing different games & ff7 back and fourth.

Point is, that if it worked without me using rivaturner, their must be a way to configure ff7 to work with the high resolution patch without disabling 8-bit palettized textures.

If you're forced to disable the 8 bit pallet.....and if you are all using the latest Nvidia Driver....

Looks like Nvidia re-enabled it. The 8 bit pallet was disabled for a while. I don't know why they enable it, when it's obviously broken.

I never had a problem with it really.
All I do is just tick Riva TNT in the config.(Even if it says pass)
If you do that, in theory even if the driver supports 8-bit palleted textures, the FFVII executable just won't use them.
If FFVII crashes, it's usually because the compatibility mode is not switched on.

Hey, I am having the same problem!
I have FF7 v1.02 with the TNT patch and the chocoboXP patch and the game plays fine (without any RIVA or TNT modes on) but the text is ugly and looks low quality, the numbers are fine, everything else is fine but not the text.
My specs are:
Windows XP Media Center SP2
P4 2.8GHz
512MB RAM
Geforce FX5200 128M AGP
DirectX 9.0c
Install Path: E:\FF7\FF7.exe
Cannot remember which detonators they are.
I cannot apply the hi res patch since my screen doesnt like it.
FF8 plays fine with no Anti Alaising on, and I have changed all the quality options up and down to try and rememdy this.
