Perlscript and Bulletin Boards...
« on: 2001-08-31 17:17:00 »
I'm postin' this b'cuase I try to open a forum, too, but I'm havin' quite a lot of problems...

I've d/l-ed YaBB (Yet another Bulletin Board), b'cause it's free. I've also d/l-ed some 'hacks', but how can I edit the board?
I mean the visual and function components? And do I have a preview?
Can I view the files on my comp, w/o uploading the files onto my Unix Server?

How is it with UBB?

I think this especially goes to SaiNt, Seph 3Dand some others (Qhimm?)...

(I know my questions are VERY general, I posted this to collect problems and solutions)

Well, I'm not quite sure what YaBB uses.

As far as I know, UBB runs on CGI
Vbulletin on PHP & a mysql database system
phpBB is alike to Vbulletin.

Most of the others generally use CGI.
Well, for starters you could use install an Apache module and the necessary perl or php support for you pc.

There's really no easy way out of this since to run php & cgi your pc needs to be set up as a server.  :(

That's mainly why I run Win2k on my PC

Bad News: My Server doesn't support CGI...

Okay, how can I set up my comp as a server and view the CGI files on my comp in a browser? (I hope this isn't too much work?)

- edit -
As for my server: I also got my accounts on tripod and geocities, so I can try to post it there...

- edit 2 -
Hey, wait a sec!

I also got SuSE Linux 7.0 Personal (Kernel: 2.2.17-pre) with Apache 1.3.12 !
Perhaps it'd be easier to set my Linux as a Server?

- edit 3 -
Forget 'bout that Linux thing - my Mainboard isn't supported! (Hm, I could install it on my PII 266 - I know that its components are supported...)

BTW: I'm currently d/l-ing apache 1.3 for Win and a perl-integration...

- edit 4 -
Hm, my PII 266 is in a LAN with Yuki's comp...hehe

UBB does run on CGI. My suggestion: set it up somewhere else, or make your own using VBScript or JavaScript.

Okay, I've been able to install Apache on my comp, and it worx - I've testet it via localhost.

But what now? Do I have to install any 'perl-mods'? When yes, how?

When I try to acces the cgi file, I get the code of it. Means: it is read as a document, not as a script...

(I'm feelin' like a REAL newbie, man   )

Alhexx- yes you have to install some perl-mods. whan you go to view cgi scripts, you want to view them in internet explorer or netscape.

Damn, this is way over my head. I simply use EZboard. They may advertise, but hell, it's free, and I don't have to worry about setting it up and maintaining it.

I'm (sort of) away for a while too, so don't expect me to be posting regularly either...I'm not *away* but I won't have access to the 'net quite so frequently (once or twice per week?)

Ant: Server? You should try to istall a server on your own comp (is tha what you mean?).
I've got installed Apache Server on my Win98 comp and ActivePerl Script.

BTW: I got it running now ! It worx!  :)
I'm currently translating it into english, b'cause it's from GYC - German YaBB Coders...

Try downloading the .pl version of YaBB instead. It's here:

...there is a value somewhere in settings.pl called  ' useflock=0 '  <-- That is the default settings. Try setting is to  ' useflock=1 '
