I checked the FAQ first and didn't see anything on this (though I didn't look past the first four pages), so I assume this is safe to ask.

Is there a way to use the Direct3D Hardware Acceleration to work on Windows XP with an ATI Radeon 9800 XT without checking the NVIDIA box? (I don't like the grid texture it gives me when I play)

And is there any way to enable 8-bit Paletted Textures on my system, too?

I applied the Chocobo, Upside-down movie, and 1.02 patches, and moved the movie files to my hard drive, though I don't know if that makes a difference.

And all my software is up to date, too.

Specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 2
1024 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz (2 CPUs)

This is not possible without 8-bit Paletted Textures support in your video card driver (talk to ATI :-P).

I don't have a machine with an ATI card to check with at the moment, but I was using a Radeon 9800 Pro for a while (with the NVIDIA patch) without any issues.  The "grid" is usually caused by FSAA or something of the like, go to Display Control Panel --> Settings --> Advanced and make sure all of that is turned off.

Ok, that worked.

Now what about the 8-bit Paletted Textures?  How do I know whether or not I can use them?

If the game's working fine without 8-bit paletted textures, you don't need them :)
