Anything to be Translated?
« on: 2007-06-14 19:40:11 »
I'm curious, is there anything from FF7 lying around that would require translation (Japanese -> English)? I'm especially interested in debug/beta/unused text or anything particularly strange or suspicious. =) Post here or email me and I'll be happy to lend a hand!

Haha, I'd appreciate a little more faith in my abilities, you mean old Grinch.

Tifa: Hey, don't scare us like that!
Barrett: I heard from Tifa... if you really want to participate that much, help us out with the next operation.
*Cloud brings out the materia*
Tifa: Wow, pretty! This is materia?
Cloud: Yeah. It withdraws an unknown power from humans.
Tifa: Why can we use this unknown power?
*Cloud shrugs*
Cloud: Why? ... I heard the answer before but I've forgotten. The only important thing is knowing how to use it.
Tifa: Okay then, how do you use it?
(Option 1: It's difficult but I'll explain...
Option 2: Too tiresome to explain...)
*player chooses option 2*
Barrett: You won't explain because it's a SOLDIER secret, huh? Oh well, I know a little bit anyway. By the way, Cloud... why did you quit SOLDIER?
Cloud: It's no business of yours.
Barrett: WHAT!?
Tifa: Enough of that. Tomorrow's gonna be tough. We have to get some rest!
Barrett: ........

Hope that helped, gimme more! I am a machine!

Sorry. If I had looked at VanishedOne's other videos before making that post, I'd have noticed that you already did some translations for him.

It's okay. ^^ I'm really curious about the debug room in the Japanese version of FF7. Are all those weird messages the same? I want to know what they say! I've never seen them! Screens, please!

I know! Square should hire me. =) Too bad you need years of post-secondary education to be considered for a translating job...

But in all honesty, I try to be as accurate as possible. I think my translations are getting more natural, in the beginning everyone sounded like they were speaking Engrish.

You know about anime and j-tv subs, what I don't like is when they try to change the exact translation to something that goes well with the story.
Mainly replies/ or reactions to other people.
I don't know how you do it, but thats just my opinion

I try to have people saying exactly what they're saying (as close as I can get) and add context if it doesn't make sense. In Japanese once you make a sentence talking about a subject, it's implied for the next sentences until you switch to another one. For example, in English we would say:

"Everyday I ride my bike to school. When I arrive, I get my books from my locker. I go to class when the bell rings."

In Japanese you only have to say I once, so:

"Every day I ride my bike to school. When arrive, get my books from my locker. Go to class when the bell rings."

In the Materia Outtake I added a bit of context when Barrett says "You won't explain because it's a SOLDIER secret, huh?" The original is just "because it's a SOLDIER secret?" to Cloud's "too tiresome to explain..." which didn't make as much sense, I felt. Does that seem reasonable?

I feel you are spot on in your example.
But in the cloud barret scene like you pointed out, since barret immediatly follows cloud's line the reader would automatically pickup that barret is replying to clouds comment. So it is rather 50 50 if that extra bit was needed, but it does add something, but then it isn't directly from the japanese words that are present..

PS I wanted to spell check this in edit mode but doesn't seem to work - so ignore the typos

i'd definitely like to see that too!  there's been some ridiculous changes in translations over the series that just were plain silly.

I'm not sure if there are any other videos or pictures or scenes of the Japanese debug room.
Well, Vanishedone put up a picture of one of the menu's in the Debug Room to show how he got the Materia scene.

Besides his videos, there's only one other video featuring the debug room on the combined Google Video/Youtube.
Final Fantasy 7 (Debug and 999 battle)

GlitterBeri's e-mail address failed and his/her YouTube account has closed :?, so I've created an account myself to respond to this: http://faceofthemoon.blogspot.com/2007/07/zangans-kanji-guide.html (If anyone wants to get in touch with me I recommend leaving a comment there rather than replying on this thread, since I don't read these messageboards regularly.)
