FF7 crashes AFTER battle
« on: 2008-05-11 01:28:20 »
Does anyone know about this problem? It doesn't happen all the time, but is still frequent enough to prevent me from advancing through the game.
Basically the game completely crashes after you finish a battle (right before the characters are about to do their winning pose).

I only have the Official XP patch installed, and everything else seems to be working fine except for one little thing which is the MIDI synthesizer seems to be choppy and generally bad. It might be an unrelated problem to the crash, but maybe it can help someone figure out the bug.

Please if anyone knows of this problem please tell me how I can fix it.

It must be a MIDI problem, since it happens right before the game loads another MIDI.

In my game, this happens in every playthrough (It doesn't matter if the game is modded or not). Almost always when I get Yuffie after fighting her or when I'm heading for Wutai, and most of the times after a battle (Not that often though). I usually hear the beginning of a MIDI that was not supposed to be playing before the crash happens (Which shows the game is probably loading the wrong MIDI file when it crashes).

Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix this, but I'm interested in a sollution as well.

If it loads wrong midis, you just need to find a correct midi archive and replace

Maybe try installing FF7Music.  It seems a lot of people are having trouble with it lately, but mine works flawlessly.  It's worth a shot.

yeah but the game loads the MIDI even with ff7music. He needs to find a fixed Midi folder or the game will crash even with ff7music. That is an external program nothing more.

However, FF7Music can override the default choice and force the game to look in the correct place for the midi..

I think obesebear has a point and I'm sure it couldn't hurt to try.

I have tried running the game with FF7Music before, but the result was the same.

I don't know if it's necessarily a problem with loading the wrong MIDI file.... because as I said, it doesn't happen every time I end a battle, it seems to be quite random... It might have nothing to do with the MIDI, but just to be safe, can someone point me to a reliable MIDI driver that I can download besides the K-Lite codec pack?

Also I might mention that I've previously installed the AnimeVamp patch, but I've uninstalled it and replaced the gm.dls file that was modified. Was there anything else I need to fix that might have been broken because of the AnimeVamp patch?

Codec packs are not used to playback MIDIs. That's entirely up to your Sound Card driver.

You should update your drivers. It didn't fix it for me but it might work for you.

Lol, I'm no more qualified than anyone else on this board.

You might try downloading an older driver for your soundcard... but since MIDIs are so very basic, I highly doubt that will do any good.  Are you running on Vista?

I'm running on XP. I have had the game run properly on my computer about 2 years ago, but I stopped playing because of the Chocobo Races crash. I haven't changed the soundcard drivers since then, so it's really confusing me why it would be doing this when I had no problems with it 2 years ago. (and yeah, I've tried running without the Chocobo patch).

other symptoms that I'm having:
- The game doesn't seem to quit properly. Everytime I exit, it looks like everything is fine, but ff7 is still a running Process when I ctrl+alt+del and I have to terminate it manually.
- ff7Music (and normal midi) randomly stops and resumes music as I walk around. It's a little better with ff7music when I turn off volume ramps emulation, but it still happens.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help, I seem to have fixed all my problems by installing the DirectX and DirectShow drivers that came with the game. I've read several times that I should just use my newer DirectX stuff, but someone told me that they don't overwrite each other, so I think everything's perfect now! thanks again, guys!
