Metal Gear Solid help?
« on: 2008-06-16 07:28:56 »
Sorry if this is in the wrong place (quite possibly in the wrong forums, please don't smite me), but I have run myself ragged trying to find this anywhere else.

I've recently installed Metal Gear Solid on my new PC (AMD Athlon 64 x2 running at 2.21 GHz w/ 4 GB RAM, and Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 256 Mb GPUs (SLI enabled)).  When I tried to start the game the first time, it gave me a message that it didn't recognize my video hardware (You think?!) and it switched to software mode.  Software mode isn't faring any better, the resolution switches, it shows the splash screen for MGS, and promptly crashes to desktop.

So, if any of you exalted geniuses have any advice or know where I can look for advice (because one of the few forums I found that offered any "advice" was a guy saying "Delete your System 32 folder."  Needless to say, I am at least bright enough that I didn't fall for that sheiskampf's trick.

Anyway, if this is in the wrong place, I'm sorry, but I don't know where else to turn, it seems someone has set all the retarded lab monkeys free on the rest of the internet and this is practically the only place I can come and not want to beat myself to death with a brick after reading just one post.

Thanks guys,

Marasmus

If it's crashing back to desktop, are you running Vista?  As you said it was on a new PC, if so, good old compatibility mode.
If that doesn't work, google it, and see if you can find a patch.

Also, when you say Metal Gear Solid, do you mean as in MGS1?  If so it may just be that it's a really old game, and it doesn't wanna play with new machines.  I had the same problem trying to get the original two Broken Swords to work on my laptop.

I'm running XP Pro, I tried compatibility mode, but it still crashes to desktop.  Google hasn't been much help as almost everything is just the usual internet retards.  I did bookmark the one forum I found that seemed like it could be at least a little helpful (oddly enough, the same forum where the guy told someone to delete their system 32 folder).  If I still can't get it to work after trying some other stuff, I may just try installing it on my crappy laptop and see if it's playable on there.

And yes, I do mean MGS 1.

Okay, I just recently had this installed on my laptop (Vista) and after some tweaking got it to work.  It may or may not work on XP too.

First off, reinstall.  And when you first install, run the installation in compatibility mode for Win 95.  Then when the game is fully installed, run the shortcut aas Win 95 also.  It should give you the message saying it doesn't recognise your hardware (It's only fully compatible with really old gpu's, and Hardware mode isn't much of an improvement), and run in software mode.  The resolution will switch to lowest possible, and it should run, where you can change it to the highest (albeit still rather low) resolution the game supports.

If this works for you, then enjoy.

If not, I'm afraid you'll have to wait for a better method from someone else. :-)
