RAW Images
« on: 2009-02-28 18:36:04 »
Hi,

I've been looking into modifying various screens for the PSX version of FF7.
e.g. '/MOVIE/CHANGE0.LZS'  == Aeris "Insert Disc" screen.

After decompressing it from LZS, I renamed to .RAW and opened up in Photoshop.
Worked it out to be 400x300 pixels... 16 Bits (IBM PC) seems to work... but it comes out in greyscale!

I've tried scribbling over the image as a test and packing it back in, works- but it's dodgy...

Anyone know how to edit RAW images effectively? Would be neat, as I could change quite a bit here :D

Cheers!

How did you decompressed this file, because I can't do it :|

Using a tool called lzss.exe:
lzss.exe d CHANGE0.LZS CHANGE0.RAW

I'm not great with handling RAW, I was hoping someone hear knew more about opening/editing the FF7 RAW Image Format. (Photoshop gives me grayscale!)

Only thing I can think is that it's paletted and you're not loading the correct palette. What does the gray scale look like?

Here's a screenshot!

I agree with you, Photoshop is obviously not the tool to use :)
(Changing channels to anything other than what I've got it set to in that dialogue doesn't work)

If we can figure out how to edit these RAWs, should be able to modify quite a bit :3

Anything less than a 24-bit image is bound to be paletted. From the looks of it it might be importing a 16 bit color image as grayscale....

I'd like to have a go at it. Where did you extract it from?

OK, I'm not sure the significance of it yet, but it seems to be an interleaved 2-channel image. One is a grayscale version of the picture and one is a paletted color version. Now it's just a question of finding the correct palette. I haven't been able to open the colored version as a file yet, but I haven't tried too hard just yet and I have to go now. :(

I'll try more later.

Very Interesting :)
Thanks for checking this out, would be nice to get those images changed with some alternative artwork!

What program are you using to handle the RAW files?

I know how to open the RAW file, with Tile Molester. Open your file, select the codec 16bpp ABGR (1555), the mode 2-dimensional and increase the width to get the good picture.  :-D

16bpp ABGR (1555)

*facepalm* I forgot that FFVII uses the 1555 color scheme. I figured it was 16bpp, but I thought one was a color patette and the other was a shade. Now I feel stupid. :P Oh well, I'm not that good with graphics anyway. :D

Don't put the height to max and use row and tile forward to make the end lines appear, you will see the difference.

I have just seen you can't display the full picture but the best you can do is to cut your picture in two and first put the up and two, put the down. If you can't see the bottom, try to decrease height, then click on "row forward" to the end of the picture and next click on "tile back" to see all the bottom of the picture. I'm sorry I can't upload anything for the moment.

Can only get this far, I'll keep trying though :-)

EDIT:
I added loads of bytes to it using a hexeditor, can then view the entire thing properly and just paste over, save, remove extra bytes, compress, import- bingo!

Many thanks: Vadd_VII & NFITC1.

I like this concept.  Any way you think this could be applied to the PC version?  I would love to do it myself but I've got no idea where to start with it.

As for the PC... I'm sure it's going to be *a lot* easier to do :3
No idea where the files are though...

Found it using lgptools.  All the disc change pictures are split into like 5 parts and seem to be assembled when needed.  I'm guessing that taking your own photo and cutting it up in the same way could possibly work.  I might give this a try later if I have time.
