The fake eax.dll breaks FF8Configurator? Nice find, I never would have figured that out myself. It will be fixed in the next version.

You need that eax.dll in the same directory as FF8.exe for the driver to work though. Thats also the only thing you should need aside from having installed the real EAXUnified. There's no config option that needs to be enabled for the driver to work in FF8.

Real and fake?

I removed the FF8Configurator and all off its added components from the program folders for now, so I'm just using the original FF8Config. I do have EAXUnified installed and the eax.dll is in there but I'm still have trouble with crashes and occasionally lag. Rebooting usually fixes this but there's this one spot that I can't seem to get past no matter how many times I try.

Hey there. I am still getting the wind.wav error at the Dyne scene. It hasn't crashed my computer (yet), but it has slowed everything WAY down. At this rate, it will take me an hour to get through the conversation/fight if it lets me. It still shows the classic "ERROR: could not read from file C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\Data\music\wind.wav" garbage.

For giggles, I went into FF7Config and switched to the default graphics driver and was able to get past the Dyne part, but then it crashed at the Chocobo race...

I really don't want to have to uninstall/reinstall everything again.  :cry:

any chance of incorporating the openGL driver settings into FF7config? As far as interface goes, the only thing i see missing is a n00b friendly way to adjust the driver setting.

Im also happy to report i haven't had any issues with crashing w/the latest version of the driver.

Its already planned, actually. I just never got around to it. Its alot of work for something that doesn't benefit me other than keeping the noobs at bay.

You could simply write your own static linked FF7config prog.It just sets a few registry keys
and is very picky if they got wiped out or if no waveout or MIDI device is found.
With a new ff7config a noob can move his ff7 directory around or start the game via a linux livecd and Wine.

Aali's Drivers: FF7Config crash
« Reply #256 on: 2010-10-18 23:28:50 »
Hello. I'm new but I'll try to not be stupid.  :|

I was having a crash and I searched high and low to find Qhimm.com. I wasn't expecting something like this, let alone something that is still being used by other people ...  :o The crash I was having is unrelated to the crash I am having now, and I searched this forum and found that it could probably be fixed by installing aali's drivers. Well the thread said by updating them but I hadn't installed them yet so I tried to do that.

I downloaded the latest drivers, I think they are 0.7.8, and I ran FF7Config, went to the graphics tab to select Custom Drivers and I get a crash.

AppName: ff7config.exe
ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.10188
Offset: 00087ad7

"The instruction at 0x5ed2aed8 referenced memory at 0x00000564. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program"

I searched around to no avail. Needless to say I am at a loss and am not sure what to do.

I've searched around and seen some interesting responses, but I'll tell you straight off the bat that I have an ATI HD3850 and definitely support OpenGL. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

I read something about a crash.dmp and app.log but I don't see any crash.dmp file and APP.txt is 0kb of completely empty.

Any help?  :o

[FF7] Aali's Driver Red Textures
« Reply #258 on: 2010-10-19 07:19:10 »
I installed Final Fantasy VII and applied the 1.02 patch. Then I installed Aali's Drvier, turned of full screen and set the resolution to 720x480. Whenever I load up this is what I see.

Running a 9800GT with the latest drivers, and Windows XP SP3

Its a known problem, turn off DEP for FF7Config and it will work. Already fixed for next release.

kiteswitch:
Weird stuff, do you have a cfg.log? You should have it but it might be empty.

Which version of the driver? Paste first ~10 lines of app.log.

*Sigh* It's still crashing in the same spot. Would someone be willing to play through my save file for me until the next savepoint?

That also happens to me. On the list of renderers it says "Broken" next to the OpenGL. Is that normal?

I had the exact same problem happening to me.
A new install fixed it for some weird reason.
Try reinstalling, it might fix it.

Completely normal. Thats the OpenGL driver Eidos included with the 1.02 patch.

Dynamic, that certainly is an unusual problem. A few questions:

1. Is it a legit copy of the game? Weird-ass problems are frequently caused by using a pirated edition of the game; you never know how its been hacked.

2. can you post the contents of your ff7_opengl.cfg in code tags?

You've got a 9800GT, same is me. I know for sure FF7 works with this card, so if your drivers are up to date then that shouldn't be the problem at all.

Because that means something goes wrong when its trying to setup OpenGL and there's practically nothing in there that could cause a crash. My money is on broken graphics card drivers.

My money is on that too.  These hotfix drivers are a piece of junk.
I initially went back to ATI from Nvidia because I thought it would be better than having to go through Nvidia's bag-o-drivers. I paid a lot of money for this graphics card to give me these kinds of unexplainable problems. I'm starting to think that a little bit of driver-diversity wouldn't be so bad right about now. I'm on 10.9 and I would have to go back to 6.12 or more just to get an older opengl version. To be fair this isn't the first time my opengl has tossed a putrid fart at me but it's usually because an older version of opengl is being used that my drivers do not support. (i.e. neverwinter nights, kotor, etc)
I could ask ATI to look at it but I've tried that before. They are perfectly aware that their drivers do not offer the best support for opengl. The only thing truly certain is that next time I buy parts for my PC, I will buy from Intel and Nvidia. But I have to laugh (if it's even funny) whenever some Nvidia user complains and says that they are going to go to ATI. :o
Well I guess I am off to the ATI forums. ???
Seems trivial at best. Do they even read their forums? Somehow I doubt it. I know the manufacturers do. Maybe it would be a better idea to send an email to powercolor first. :|

window_size_x = 720

window_size_y = 480

preserve_aspect = no

fullscreen = no
Why would you do this? The game natively runs at 640x480. If you want it in windowed mode, try changing that 720 to 640.
