I'm thinking FF8
« on: 2010-10-30 13:38:17 »
Hey everyone, I've been playing FF8 again and it got me thinking. The work everyone has done on FF7 is amazing we should see what is possible with FF8. I'm going to start looking into it soon, I have very high hopes for what can be done with it. Would anyone else be interested?

You've been here long enough to know that people have taken up this task countless times.  Work on it is going to be just as slow as FF7 was.    Best of luck and whatnot, but FF8 just doesn't have the fanbase.

FF8 doesn't have the modding tools, its formats aren't as well known, etc. Fanbase or not, it's harder to get anything done on FF8.

I'm interested, but I don't count for much. I'm a complete newbie here, and haven't got much experience.
I've been mostly decoding some enemies AI, for fun, and 've been rewritting some. (see this thread for example: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=10876.0)

What do you have in mind exactly? What aspects of FFVIII would you like to mod?

I have been toying with the idea of doing a few things with ff8. We shall see how it goes.

The entire SYSTEM ff7 is based on ( combat, enemies, spells and materia and so on, equipment ) is much more suited to modding than FF8.
In general, I love FF8 as story but never liked the system. It's ridiculous if you go game over in regular fights because the monsters are lvl 99 when you can one-sidedly ragestomp bosses.

The reason I don't care much for FF8 modding is because the translation was decent (well, it still had mistake sbut nothing like 7), the graphics are reasonable, the gameplay is decent...

The only thing I would add is that it needs a ff8music :P

The world map looks terrible on the PC version...

It could do with a difficulty mod as well.

ah yes the world map... that needs an update.  The textures are actually already there too if I remember.

If it counts, MrAdults has cracked the format for battle models, and updated his model viewer for them. This includes animations. It's a lot better than the Russian one that's been posted around a few times.

Those are good news, ultima espio!  :D

I just try it out, it crashes with still a few models (Zell weapons, Kiros...) but it's definitly better than Charedit.exe who could almost only open monsters models
Thanks for sharing out this information!

I know, he said it works with psx models, and the tools to extract them from the PC corrupt some of the models.

..So...how do you get them from the PSX version? :P

I agree with DLPB, one of the top priorities should be an FF8Music. I would also like to redo some character models, clean them up a bit, redo some textures including the world map. Depending on how much the community could figure out the engine seems to allow for a lot of modding ability and I think it would be a lot less temperamental than FF7 can be.

I recall reading somewhere that somebody was working on getting the mp3s to work in FF8, not sure how much progress came out of it if anything. I also remember somebody saying that they had found a way to put the PSX world map onto the PC version. Which is much cleaner and nicer, still could use improvement but nonetheless, better. Not sure where that was either. Ill do some re-research and see what comes back up.
