PSFs for FF7 PC, help me....
« on: 2003-09-01 03:01:04 »
What a wonderful way to end a wonderful day(sarcasm level high). After a particular sucky day I came home to play FF7, but for some reason my sound card is such a peice of shit it won't use any soundfonts right, so I'm forced to play with excruciatingly horrible music. Well today I had had enough and decided to try Ficedula's FF7 music program with the FF7 PSFs. Alright, I configured eveything, and after about an hour of hair pulling, bingo it worked, for some reason the midis also played with the PSFs but that was easily fixable by muting midi in the audio control panel. Everything was going great until 2 minutes into gameplay FF7 freezes and continuously repeats the last note it had played. That's it, just out of no where, the peice of shit freezes my entire comp for no damn reason. Anyway I tried it again. Same thing. Again. Same thing. Again and again and again. Same bullshit. Can somone please help me before I take my SOB computer and throw it out my window and/or beat my head against a wall untill it's a bloody pulp. Stupid ass day...

Oh and btw. I read the entire using PSFs in FF7 topic and nothing worked...
I'm just hoping somone here has some kind of solution.

FF7Music is an experimental program and is by no means guaranteed to work properly on all system configurations.  Complete troubleshooting procedure has not been established.
We may not be able to help you... sorry.  Maybe Rubicant knows something.

Tell us about your PC... video card, OS, RAM, CPU, etc.?

Not sure, but I think I've solved to problem where it just freezes and repeats the same note. Now it just randomly crashes giving me a slew of different and seemingly random errors and then usually freezes my comp. (sigh).

Anyway, here are my comp's specs.

Windows ME
700Mhz Intel Celeron
191 MB SD Ram
ATI All-In-Wonder 128 PCI Video card
Sound Blaster Live X-Gamer sound card <----I hate this piece of shit
30 Gig generic hard drive
Yamaha 24x-10x-40x Drive
Generic motherboard

Hmm...ahh...what output plug-in are you using for this operation?  Also,  what midi device do you have selected? I would suggest finding one on your system (if you can) that doesn't play midi, such as SBLive's Midi Out device. Also, it would probably be best if he (you, Wesker)  tries out the most recent version of ff7music. Which was not included in that package. I've been meaning to update it, but I'm a stupid lazy bastard.

I'll get on it now....

Well, I've tried everything you mentioned. I used 1.10 and 1.05. I used Wave out and DS out. My midi device is set to Creative midi out and my midi data is set to general midi. There are 2 things I get.

1. Game + comp freezes and hangs on the final note that was played.

2. Random slew of errors, game crashes, comp usually freezes

I'm about to give up hope...maybe my comp is just too slow to handle it or something. Anyway, If you find anything out please let me know. Thanks for your help so far, I really do appreciate it.

This sounds like some sort of weird problem with windows. I bet a fresh install would probably fix things, but let's not go that far yet. Even though reinstalling windows really isn't that serious of an operation.

Have you actually gotten ff7music 1.10 to play music?

Do the screw-ups happen in both versions?

Does the game work at this point with an un-modified version of ff7.exe?

and finally... what version of ff7 are you using?

This is a perfect chance for me to complain about Windows ME.  Ha ha.

OK. I'm not sure about what version of FF7 i'm using, but the music did play with both versions of FF7music, however the problems occured with both versions. I did not experience any of these problems prior to using FF7 music. Also, I can run the game smoothly with the patched .exe as long as no music other then midi is set to play.

I don't know what the problem could be. It really does sound like a silly windows error. I'm guessing a reload of windows could probably solve this because this is the kind of error it seems like...

You're right. It probably is some sort of windows error(I'm using ME, what do you expect?), but I really can't reinstall windows due to the fact that I don't have the reinstall cd. However I did find something out after a bit more testing. Intead of Psfs I decided to use SPCs. To my surpirse it ran smooth for the most part, with only an occasional crash. Oddly though, whenever I shut FF7 down I get an error message now, It says "Runtime Error 216 at 00002BE8". The error itself causes no problems, I just press ok and it goes away. Perhaps that can aid us in finding a solution.
