Hm....found an FF8 monster model viewer today...

http://kvaks.narod.ru/FF8Info.html

Can't try this out though...cause I don't have any copy of FF8 with me. And I'm not even sure if this is for the PC or PSX version either. I can pick up both whem I go back to my parents' house.

Well... the model files included look like the PC ones, although I haven't checked out the PSX version of FF8 enough to do a comparison. But it looks like the PC version.

I think it's the PC version. 'cause I compared each .dat file with the one extracted by Garden(thank Qhimm for the source code,I compiled by myself and it worked well :D ) and found no differences.
PS:some d***.dat files from that battle.fs can also be viewed, but they have some errors while I open them in this viewer. Some says "no texture".

So...can you upload the compiled source code for that FF8 file extracting program somewhere to download? And i'm picking up ff8 pc from my parents' house this weekend. What programs do I all need to run the model viewer so I'll have everything when I pick up the game?

Thanks,
~Sky

Nothing will you need to run that model viewer, the data files are contained in the software. If you really want to extract some files from the .fs in ff8,you can use Eight which Qhimm had already released.but when come to the field files, I think you need Garden, but I'm sorry that I must recomplie its source code 'cause I lost the one I've completed, so please wait sometimes. :D

fa_pa:

Yes, it would be nice. However, I just need the executable(s), without the dat files. I can get them on my own from my FF8 copy, and I don't want to download megs of data...
So please upload the application itself (or email it to me @
[email protected] )

Thank you!

Okie dokie everybody, after about 6 hours of downloading I have it.  I decompressed it, updated it and then recompressed it into one mass file because I think multiple files are a pain in the an' .  If y'all want multiple files then I need to see some requests for multiple files ;-).  My server isn't the fastest but it's a lot faster than the original programmer's server.  I have a max upload cap of 24K/sec so please be pacient(sp?) because I'm working as hard as I can to make my server rock out (with the ( () ( |( out).  First go to my my website, click on enster, then click on downloads and then download the file.

fa_pa: thanx for the file. I'll takea look at it.

I've changed Ultima's internal data manager, so it should be easier importing other file formats, and if the FF8 model format doesn't differ too much from the FF7 one, it shouldbe no problem importing them...

Alhexx: Unfortunately, they're quite different as far as I can tell. Moving models from one game to another will be tricky, at best. Also, the FF8 character models haven't been fully decoded yet... (working on the animation)

Well, doesn't matter. Ultima is *already* able to build FF7 .p files from scratch, and the only thing I need to import a model itself are the vertices and the polygons, the rest can be interpolated...
As for the animations or the skeletons, I haven't implemented them into Ultima yet. Working on it...

I'm not sure, how does FF7 handle fully textured models?

hi, I can only view very small models and the animations listed, along with
show mesh
wire
show bones
texture
and UV coord  functins

Does this viewer have hidden functions, like mirex's Leviathen,  or is the above functions it? Because at the very least a zoom in, zoom out function would be nice. Also some of the models do not seem to show correctly and only show weird woold like creature.  Any else have these problems

Qhimm: Usualy not, but as far as I have checked the p format, it shouldn't be a problem...
Anyways, I was goind to create a vertex color interpolation algorithm that creates vertex colors from given texture coordinates and a texture...

@nixmahan yup there is a zoom funktion. hold right mouse and strg (ctrl) pressed and move the mouse. when you hold right mouse and shift you can change your point of view. if you only hold right mouse you can rotate the model.

thanks, are there written instructions that I should know about for the viewer or is it just a universal 3d model veiwing thing for all programs?

Well in the PSX version
You are limited to textures of 256x256
You can use a 256 color map.
You can use more than one palette per map (in 256 colors I assume as well since they do this in 16 color maps).
UV coords are 8 bit values (see above texture size limit).
So you can have a fully textured object.  There are no limits to the number of parts in them either so you can have a fair number of 'parts' :)

Many programs use similair 'tricks'.
