[7th Heaven] Bypass "verify my files"?
« on: 2025-11-15 03:18:12 »
Hello. After modding various files within Final Fantasy 7, and launching it via 7th Heaven, I continually get this message:
Code: [Select]
### Launching Final Fantasy VII ###
Checking System DEP status...
Verifying latest game driver is installed ...
Checking FF7 is not running ...
Checking FF7 .exe exists at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\ff7_en.exe ...
Checking FF7 Steam if installed correctly......
Verifying installed game is compatible ...
YUFFIE: Urrk!! Something's wrong with your installation, and it... ulp... Use Steam's "Verify my files" tool or reinstall from CD to fix.
Failed to launch FF7. View the above log for details.

I've attempted to get around this by installing these changes by creating my own mod, but options to learn that are few and far between, let alone actually INSTALLING it. I've searched around Steam, and 7th Heaven to no avail. Some guidance would be very appreciated. (p.s, please don't suggest going to 7th Heaven's respective discord servers. Not a fan of discord.)

You're flunking the piracy check. Specifically, which files in your installation directory did you add or modify?

I have a similar problem. I just bought the game on Steam and selected a few favorite mods (mainly audiovisual upgrades). Everything runs perfectly.

Then I tried the final step: using an old installer to install a Czech translation from here: https://www.rk-translations.cz/ff7cz.php

Unfortunately, it modifies some files and I end up with the same error message as the previous user.

Is there any way to disable the file checking? The translation will not be remade as a 7th Heaven mod, and it would be a shame to be forced to play the vanilla version just because of this final check.

Thanks for your help.

7th Heaven requires the untouched english version of ff7.exe (ff7_en.exe)... I imagine this translation thing is messing with it, making it impossible.

Thank you, @Bonez, for the answer. The Czech localization really does modify the executable file. I switched it back to the original one, and it now runs through 7th Heaven — but without the Czech language.

Is there anything in 7th Heaven that forces the game to use English? Could it be bypassing or overriding the original language files which the czech translation changed?

Thank you for the answer.

Ok, a quick update.

I’ve found out that two mods were causing the translation to be overwritten.

Echo-S 7 – I disabled it completely, since there seems to be no way to use English audio together with Czech subtitles.
ESUI – I only turned off some options that are explicitly meant for native English.

Voilà — the Czech language now works.

However, there is one final issue: the font. It doesn’t support Czech special characters, so instead I see random symbols from the ESUI font.

Is there a way to completely disable the ESUI font and let the original font load instead (the one injected by the translation)?

Yes disable ESUI in the mod manager, it is designed for English language.

You wont be able to play a translation alongside any gameplay mods, as there will be a conflict in the scripts they change, which is why Echo-S didnt work.

Which characters were an issue that work on the stock font?

Thank you @Chrysalis a lot for your answer.
For context: I’m a long-time fan of strong narrative games - RPGs and point & click adventures especially. I started many years ago with Baldur’s Gate 1. This is actually my first Final Fantasy title, and since the series is so highly praised, I want this experience to be as good as possible. It never originally seemed like something I would love, but I really wanted to give it a proper try. So I truly appreciate the work you and others have put into these mods that make the game much more playable by modern standards.

To clarify - I don’t necessarily need to disable the entire mod. As I mentioned before, only the parts that depend on the original language (e.g., conversation images) are problematic. I can still enjoy the rest of your excellent work.

From my testing, that doesn’t seem entirely accurate. Apart from the incorrect font rendering, the Czech translation works fine alongside many other mods: texture mods, model mods, Cosmos Gaia, Cosmo Memory, 60 FPS mod, and SYW Unified FMV. All of these function correctly so far.

Which characters were an issue that work on the stock font?

- the "RT" should be "ž"
- the "I" should be "í"
- the "U" should be "š"

I realized my earlier message was inaccurate - the font that correctly displayed Czech characters (“ž í š” etc.) was not the stock font. The translation authors created a modified font that includes these additional glyphs.

So my main question is this:
If the translation team provides me with their modified font texture, would it be possible to overwrite the ESUI font with it?

I located the mod directory. Some .iro files are unpacked (possibly by 7th Heaven automatically). The ESUI mod is unpacked, and inside I found multiple font-related files in the text folder and various subfolders.

If I overwrite those font files directly, will 7th Heaven load them correctly?

The second part of the question is determining which font variant to replace. I see bright/gradient variants depending on ESUI settings, and there are also “expanded” sub-versions. I don’t see explicit configuration options for expanded variants - so I’m unsure whether all variants are used or only specific ones..

At the moment I don’t have the translation font files yet, but the authors are very helpful and responsive, so I expect I’ll receive them soon. I just want to understand in advance what the correct technical approach would be.

Thank you

After taking a closer look at the ESUI font files, I noticed that the different variants mainly differ in things like embedded icons. From what I understand, those icons are mapped to specific characters inserted into the English script, and the font replaces those characters with icon glyphs.

Since the Czech translation doesn’t include those special placeholder characters, those icon mappings would effectively be unused. That would likely mean I’d be limited to a plain text-only variant - something like the Text-Bright-NoExpanded font - without the additional icon features. (which is actually still great state)

Am I thinking about this correctly?

This is correct, originally there was a few retranslation projects using ESUI as part of their work, back when the letters still existed in the font textures.  But we expanded the icon features in ESUI repurposing those characters to the icons.

Ideally we would like to support more languages and find new methods of implementing icons, so maybe a solution will be found to avoid the current problem.

You can if you want replace the letters on your own copy of ESUI to restore functionality, or if I can I will provide a link to a very old build of ESUI which they might still be there.

Also I wanted to ask - for testing purposes I deleted all the content in "text" folder in anticipation the game throws and error or fallback to the original font, but ... nothing has changed - everything works as before. How is that possible? Where does the game take the fonts? I thought it's from the C:\Users\MyNickname\7th Heaven\2b49d831-6556-41df-9ddb-d1a6e937f548__Tsunamods__Enhanced_Stock_UI_2,961\Text\
Do I have wrong path? (the path above is the path set in 7th Heaven). Or does the 7th Manager somehow cache the mods elsewhere?
