7th Heaven Support on the New Version
« on: 2026-01-29 16:44:46 »
Hello to all.

Square just announced a new version of the original Final Fantasy VII. This new version will substitute the 2013 version, but those who purchase the 2013 version will be able to get both versions.

So, do you think 7th heaven will be compatible with the new version?

If it turns out to be non compatible is it possible to make mods work with pirated versions?, since currently it requires the Steam version to use mods and it will be de-listed.

Pirated games will never be supported ever.

Sucks for the new players who can't use the mods then, piracy is keeping games alive when studios de-list them from the store.

We have no idea how the new version will work. We don't know if mods will just work out of the box.  We don't know if they'll work with very little effort, some effort, or a lot of effort. We don't know if some mods will work and some won't. We don't know if they'll never ever work no matter what. We just don't know. No sense speculating til it does and we see what is and isn't possible.

I wouldn't bet on compatibility at all. 99% it won't work. We already know that saves are not compatible between versions, if such a simple thing as a save file is not compatible, what chances do complicated mods have?

The real question is if the 7th heaven and other mod creators are both capable and willing of making updates that make the mods compatible with the new version, but that can only be answered after the new version is released.

My guess is it will be be just a steam release of the Windows store version of the game (i.e the switch / ps4 / xbox release). I've not used the windows store version (if anyone has saves please send em my way) but the switch version uses a new name for the pc saves instead of being saveXX.ff7 its now ff7savexx. I have heard (but i don't have it to confirm) that the windows store version uses some kinda of hash for the save file names. They are also no longer saved in the FF7 installDir but instead in AppData.  I would suspect they could easily make a way to covert them if they wanted to. Im sure it will take me longer to figure out how they generate the save name hashes than any real "converting" of save data.

My guess of what the new version will contain
 - 3x speed modifier and other baked in cheats that are on the switch version
 - Removal of the SE account needed for cloud sync
 - Use of the save naming convention and paths from from the Window PC release
 - Japanese Text support out of the box

IIRC you can use most mods on the switch version (the only of the new ones i own). the limiting thing being what their baked in driver supports since we don't have a ffnx built for switch. Someone out here has to have the windows store version to tell us about modding it. I suspect for windows its mostly the same as this upcoming release.
