FFXI sound effects?
« on: 2005-10-18 12:57:33 »
Is there any possibility to download somewhere sound effects from Final Fantasy XI? I can't afford buying original one and hacking out of it so if someone would be so nice and help me ;]
Maybe from ffx? It would be more difficult if not impossible...

By sound effects, do you mean the indivdual battle effects, or just town songs and whatnot?

A while back I remember something about being able to change the music on the PC version to your own. Logicly speaking, the same can be done for individual effects when found. The only thing is that FFXI uses some weird music format, i dont even remember what its called. You'll need an MP3 to whatever converter.

But, logicly speaking, if it can be done with the battle music, it can also be done for the individual effects, like a Ghoul's death, or a Great Katana swing, or clanking armor. Its just a matter of finding where those effects are stored and converting them.

I don't think it could be that much. As I know ffxi takes from hdd about 6GB when installed. Including huge world, textures, effects and other cool stuff the sound effects cannot take gigabytes.
If they are in uncompressed wave files then it's possible.

There are like what, maybe of handful of weapons?

Katana
Great Katana
Dagger
Sword
Great Sword
Polearm
Club
Stave
Axe
Great Axe
Hand to Hand

Then, of course, Ranged Weapons, which disperse into:

Rifles
Crossbows
Bows
Throwing

Although there are different SUB weapons (Scimitars, Degens, Blades under the Sword category; Lances, Spears, Couses under Polearms; Uchigatanas, Katanas, and Straight Katanas under Great Katanas), they all make the same noise when hit. Every main category has its own effect that applies for all the sub categories mentioned above, with about 3 or 4 animation swings for each hit.

So, roughly, all weapons combined, you have only 15 sound effects. Of course, I obviously left out Instruments, but to my knowledge, there are only stringed, wind, and voice instruments, an extra 3.

Then you have Summoning Magic, Black Magic, White Magic, and Ninjutsu. Every spell would have its own sound effect, so thats where things might get hairy. They all start out the same in their main categories, i.e. All Black Magic spells will start off sounding the same, but Blizzaga IV will sound completely different than Warp II at the end.

Of course there will be dozens and dozens of sound effects for using items and entering houses and various monsters, but if its just the main weapon categories, I doubt its anywhere surpassing the 6GB install.

Nice to see other FFXI players here. I think Im the only serious full time player here @__@

Well thanks for straighten things up. But it still can't be gigs. For magic it could be easy to combine two diffrent sound effects played one after another as you said, starting sound into casting.

I must disappoint you. I'm not FFXI player. Don't have time and cash for this stuff.

Dizzam. Still the loner.

Anyways, no, definetly not in gigs, the format they're in compresses them really small ontop of that if I remember right.

Damn, this polemics seems kinda pointless cause I haven't found any way to rip those sounds out of game ;]
Right now I doubt that is possible ;)

So downloading the sound effects does not violate the rules of the forum as downloading the whole game does?

In all honesty, this doesnt really fall into normal piracy. I guess you could somewhat say it is, being since it is taken without permission or ownership.

At the same time, it's not a soundtrack thats offered for sale, or a whole game, its maybe .1 second clips of metal hitting metal.
