What exactly does patch 1.02 do...
« on: 2006-01-29 15:49:11 »
I was just wondering, what exactly does the new patch do besides bypass the 8 bit palletted textures? I've noticed 2 things since I installed the patch with XP, first of all, whenever whoever it is talking to cloud inside his head or w/e (ie. in the first reactor "Watch out! This isn't just a Reactor"), an annoying reddish background color comes up that I've never seen before, and the only way for it to work normally is run it in software mode, thus making the patch pointless. The second thing, possibly just in my immgination or fear that the patch would try to improve on this great game but making it worse, is that the MIDI files sound a lot different (worse) than they always did, so my main question, can comebody please tell me what exactly patch 1.02 changes in terms of in game things like that? Final Fantasy 7 is such an amazing game that it would really suck if they ruined it with a new patch...cuz i dont wanna play without hardware acceleration, but i dont want any messed up red colors and bad music that wasnt there before...

Where did you get this patch? It might have been renamed or something.

The red color thing is intentional but only happens if you are running in Direct3D mode. The would not be affected by the patch (it only replaces the game executables, not the MIDI files), you should check the config in FF7config and try different options for the MIDI driver and MIDI data and figure out which combination you like best (different results depending on your MIDI hardware).

Thanks a lot for the help, I kinda realized it might have been intentional, and I could configure the MIDI settings to my liking too, but is there anything else that running the game in Direct3D mode would change from the normal Software Rendering? And also if this patch doesn't affect MIDI files at all, what is the best option to use in the Config, in terms of best quality and the closest music to intended for the game (like the PSX version), should I use the General MIDI, or use that Yamaha thing i installed with the game, or does it really matter and its all preferance? Thanks in advance.

There is a FF7Music program if you want to download the PSX version of the songs to your game. If you truly want to use midi, you will have to experiment, your system is mostly likely different from ours and our settings may not be the best for you.

Mmm, Direct3D allowed filtering on the textures that makes the game look better (most noticeable when there actually are textures, i.e. in battles). It will also be faster, but that's not really an issue on today's computers.

If you are using Windows 9x/ME, you can install the Yamaha S-YXG70 SoftSynthesizer off of the FF7 install disc and use that with Yamaha XG MIDI to get some nice music.  The S-YXG70 does not work with Windows 2000/XP (doesn't show up as a "MIDI Driver" option).  You should have the Microsoft GS Wavetable driver (pretty crappy IMO) and maybe another one with your sound card.  You can try those with the General or Yamaha XG MIDI and see what you like, or you can try to use FF7Music (linked by Midgar above).

The software mode doesn't seems to use diethering so I'd say everything that is 3D looks worse and the text windows too.
