I'm very much against allowing larger .sigs than 255 characters. Sigs should only contain crucial information that can't be found in the post description or the user profile. Thus I find little need to allow them at all, but I'll allow 255-character ones for now to see if things work out.

Also, I'm removing the ICQ-online images, since they seem to be the primary slowdown (at least on my computer).

I don't think my opinion really counts but... for me, avatars are good (it is sinplier to recognize posts done by specific user), signs are not (they can really mess up the board (look on other boards)). And something more, just wondering why is so silent here lately?

Whoho!
Never saw Qhimm posting SO often  !

Fice: 56K - 5 computers? Uh - and I though my 56K 1 computer connection is slow...

Qhimm: 'bout that ICQ-Pics: Can't you simply upload the pics onto the server? I know that then you won't know if users are online, but it's better than no pic.

(I hope that was all I wanted to answer - sooooo much posts  )

Skillster: Did you forget to click on 'Custom Avatar>>>' ?

I see there's a bug with the 'Get Avatar>>>' Function. No avatars uploaded?

It is possible to get them back, it just depends if Qhimm's got the time. You can hack phpBB so much more than UBB, just look at the NextFF Forums. The SaiNt's done loads.

I'm quite sure we'll get that statuses back. I'm currently finishing my board, and now I know, too, that it's possible to change (almost) everything.

I wonder if this is going to be a 9-page topic  ?

I am sharing 1 56k modem between 5 PC's but for some weird reason WinXP manages to reserve half the bandwidth so 4 pcs share half the modem bandwidth while the other pc has the other half. The Winxp pc is mine so I am not complaining

Well, currently we don't have any net access (I'm posting this from uni) because we've just installed Win2K Advanced Server on the house server ... problems galore with the modem sharing. Though it's *nearly* working...

On the plus side, by the end of the month we'll (hopefully) have ADSL ^_^

Interestingly enough we have just had an email from BT offering uss free installation so we signed up for ADSL. We get it on the 16th! Finally I'll be able to download games!!!

Joey, please don't post (any more) bs. A 33.6 modem is SLOW and there's no getting around it...

it aint that slow, considering most isps only connect at 43000bps,
so its only say one kilobyte a second behind 56k modem
and also if u use a good OS then 36k modem can beat a 56k on a windows system.

Of course 56k modem is the slowest alternative still available without buying second-hand (well, not quite, but getting there quickly)

Side note: Is noone outside of Norway and Germany using ISDN?

You can get ISDN here but its not very popular as ADSL is faster and easier to set up, also you can use the phone whilst connected to the net which you caant with ISDN if you want full speed

Joey: I use Modem Booster on my 33.6K and it's not that fast. With Download Accelerator Plus my standard speed is usually around 3.3KB/sec. I wish I had cable.... :weep:

Rates, heh? Well, as for Germany and DSL:

Germans mostly have ISDN, b'cause for DSL, AFAIK, you need special copper wires. So DSL is sth like a beta release here...
If anyone wants higher rates here, the ppl mostly buy ISDN - it's available everywhere in Germany and it's not that expensive as DSL.

As for me: I've got only my 56K...
I've also got a cable connection that's able to transport internet data. So I just needed to buy a cable modem and find a provider, but ... it's quite expensive - and I've got to pay my connection costs from my pocket money
