Troubleshooting / Re: Final Fantasy VIII intro weirdness
« on: 2010-03-17 18:04:23 »
Same thing happens to me, not sure if it's related to Aali's driver or not.

2
Hi! I'm new here and I'd like to thank you Aali for the driver, it's great.

But I have a problem.
Whenever i try to set my screen resolution in ff7_opengl.cfg to 1280x1024,  I save the file but there is no change at all.
The resolution keep the crappy 640x480.

I've applied the driver in a new fresh instalation of the game.

Anyone have any idea of what I'm doing wrong?

Have you tried opening Notepad as an Administrator before editing the cfg file? As in, right click on Notepad, Run as Administrator? Then simply navigate to your FF7 folder and open the cfg file, edit, and it should save.

Well, I fixed the issue with the picture being on top left of screen, I just changed it from software render to hardware render and it seems to work except for when I go to new game the game crashes, I think it has trouble running the video intro, not sure.

You should try using Aali's custom graphic's driver for FF8, instead. Here's the link. The launcher is a great utility that I used for a long while, but Aali's driver allows for more customization.

First of all, great guide!

Just wanted to add something I figured out. I run x64 Windows 7. If I try to run FF7 through FF7Music while Firefox 3.6 is open, it crashes. It works fine if Firefox isn't running, however. No idea what the clash is, but figured it might help anyone who is running into the same issue.

Sorry to double post, but version 1.3 is now available. The HP value is type short, which means the cap is 32,767.

Thanks for the quick turn around!

Yea uh, we got a problem. The .dll needed for Grevier isn't installing properly, and my party as it maxed on everyhing but HP, isn't even doing 9999, but I'll see if Lion Heart Changes that. And the maxium HP I can get so far with 100 Death spells junctioned on Squall is around 10100, then with HP abiltys I'm up to 20000 Squall is lvl 100.

I believe Regen or Full-Life is better than Death for HP.

Great! This makes Omega Weapon a joke with the right junctions!

I imagine a strength capped Squall could unleash a potent frenzy with Lionheart.

Well if there is a high res file.. doesn't that mean we ought to be able to use it?

Well, theoretically it's of course possible, provided those files exist on the PC version (and maybe even if they don't, though it would be a lot harder), however...

It's not easy to fix I'm afraid. The low-res textures are not in the same format as the high-res ones (not the same layout, they're both TIMs of course) so the game must be aware of that it's using those textures, and likewise it must be made aware of that it's using the high-res textures for that to work. If that code is missing, it will be very difficult to fix this.

...so yeah, it most likely will be a difficult thing to implement.

Is it possible that for hardware considerations, they simply hard coded the PC version to always use the low-res textures?

Can anyone confirm or deny that FF8 never used the high-res textures for the PC version? (Even on the hardware and software it was meant to run on)

I can confirm that I have never seen the high-res textures on my PC version, and I have played it through 100% in both hardware and software mode, and on both a typical machine when the game was released for PC and on a relatively new machine with a new generation graphics card.

Does the program do its job outside of FF8?  If not, then perhaps a reinstall of the gamepad's drivers are in order?

Finally, you mentioned earlier that it could be interference from another USB device.  How many devices are hooked up and installed?

I'll check the program tomorrow when I am able; only the gamepad, my keyboard, and my mouse are currently hooked up via USB ports. Truly perplexing, thanks again for the help!

15
Ok, I just remembered something that could help you in this situation.

Joy to Key (English version)

This should allow you to map your current keyboard controls to your gamepad.  This will bypass FF8's native gamepad support, as it is an outside program.  I haven't used it myself, but I heard a lot of people on console emulation forums have success using it to get their gamepads working with whatever game they're playing.

Hmmm... this SHOULD work, but it doesn't. Which is utterly confounding, haha.

16
Yay, more modding love for FF8!

17
I see, thank you for the information. It won't let me install DX 6.1, it turns out, probably because of the reasons you stated. Right now I'm just playing with my keyboard, and it's really not half bad, I just wish I could figure out the reason for this. Anyway, thanks for all the help so far, if I somehow figure it out I'll be sure to update the thread.

18
Eh, then at this point you ought to try running the DX6 install package.  I wouldn't be surprised if M$ skimped on the pre-DX8 stuff in whatever DirectX package that gets distrubuted with Vista.

Okay, how will that affect my current DX package? Will I need to reinstall that afterward?

19
Ok, so its not a driver problem.

....Are you attempting to run FF8 in any compatiblity mode?  If I remember right, USB controllers might have issues when used with a program running under Win95 or 98 compatibility mode.

Administrator rights and XP SP2. Hmm. That gives me an idea. Perhaps I should try running it regularly.

EDIT: Nope, didn't do anything.

20
When confused, go back to the basics.

Does the controller show up under "Game Controllers" in the Control Panel?  If its there, FF8 should see it.  Secondly, FF8 talks to the controller using DirectInput.  You could also run DXDIAG to check if its detected in the "Input" tab.

It does show up, and also appears when I run DXDIAG. I regularly use it with FF7, so I know it's working...

Troubleshooting / FF8 - Logitech Rumblepad 2 Not Working
« on: 2009-07-25 20:30:50 »
So, this is very peculiar. I can play FF8 with the gamepad just fine on my 64bit Vista laptop, but on my 32bit Vista desktop, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get my gamepad working. I've double checked FF8 Config, I've tried mapping the buttons to the keyboard controls, I double checked that the gamepad still works... I'm really at a loss here.

EDIT: I suspect there's some issue with other USB devices interfering. Haven't been able to figure it out yet though.

Archive / List of FF8 Tools?

Edit: Nevermind, found what I was looking for!

I just played it again on my laptop while on vacation... I forgot just how much I enjoyed playing this game!

It really is very under appreciated. Sure, aspects of the combat mechanics could be a little less frustrating, but for me, that's a minor trifle compared to the great story. I would have to agree with the reviewer mentioned at the outset of the article concerning the plot. One of the strong points of the story is that it knows what it wants to do right from the beginning, and rarely strays, whereas in most FF games, the plot is typically all over the place. FFX comes to mind as another game that knew where it wanted to go from the outset, but FF8's story appeals a little more to me, perhaps because they actually develop a love story in it. Now, don't get me wrong, I love action and excitement as much as the next guy, but a good love story has its place too, and I had forgotten just how well this one was done.

Additionally, there was never a case where I thought, why are the characters doing this? In many of these games I fundamentally have a problem with the typical saving the world for the sake of saving the world theme. Often, this is masked by personal tragedies, such as losing homes or loved ones, but that's so cliche. I thought FF8 managed to maintain a fine balance between personal motivation and overarching concern for the world at large. Oh, and the orphanage moment I mentioned before wasn't so bad. It wasn't a strong point of the plot, but it wasn't as self-indulgent as I had remembered and feared.

Finally, it visually is simply an amazing game. The character and environment designs are simply top notch. I can't wait until I get home and can play the game again on my 'gaming' computer and see the visual difference.

FF7 has always been my favorite because of the groundbreaking (in a game) journey that Cloud takes with his psyche, but I have to admit that FF8's story, on a whole, is more concise and engaging than FF7's. FF7's story was great, but admittedly very complex, to the extent that it required numerous play throughs, at least for me, to really grasp what was going on, and even then there were many ambiguous elements. FF8 never really suffers from that problem, if you want to call it a problem.

25
I'll have to look into that then. It's probably due to some check I'm not performing before telling FF7Music to shut up :)

Actually, I poked around some threads a bit more, and I think the problem actually stems from FF7Music. Funny, I didn't remember having this problem with the program before, but the memory can be a tricky thing...

No, this is a known problem with FF7Music. Theoretically, unchecking "obey stop" should fix it, but I've noticed that it frequently doesn't. Unfortunately, that's not likely to be fixed. It happens whenever the battles don't have their own music.
