Lots of people say that.. but just the same number say it sucked. I think it was the abrupt change from 7 and 8 into how 9 was.. just my opinion though..

DJ is exactly right..

I hated 9.. I could relate to cloud, and I could also relate to Squall.. But I just couldn't relate nor care about the monkey boy..

I still played it.. I even beat it.. But.. After I played it through .. Ignoring most of the side quests.. I never touched it again. 9 just felt like a kiddie game.. And I didnt like that at all.. The characters looked like they were targeted at a young audience, and so did the scenery .. It just felt wrong to me..

(minor spoilers for FF9/5/7 may follow, I tried to be as vague as possible though)

I dunno, I kind of liked the exaggerated style. though I'll admit I HATED Quina and Amarant. Ugh, tacked -on characters.

And as for the whole "relating to the characters" thing, I could relate to them, and that actually kind of made me like the games a little less. Well, Cloud anyway. Squall just made me want to hit him on several occasions. (I did NOT like that character, but that's another issue.) I'm a depressive person and yeah, it was kind of interesting to relate to cloud, but I don't play RPGs to play as myself, I play RPGs to well... role-play :P

Mind you, ff7 is still at the top, just because it finally broke the whole formulaicness of  RPGs and decided to

a) have an incredibly flawed main character
b) kill off someone for emotional effect and story (FF5 did that too, but that wasn't really released here, plus honestly there wasn't much of a difference pre/post Galuf at least IMO)
c) play a lot of mind games with the gamer

(and Sephy is just cool, too)

FF9 had the more unrealistic style and some really memorable characters, because it delved into the same "coming to terms with reality" kind of dealie that FF7 did... plus I felt that even if it seemed a little more "childish" it had a lot of hidden depth in the characters, especially Vivi, Freya, Zidane and to a lesser extent Garnet/Dagger.

Just my take though.

My top 5:

i) Final Fantasy 7
ii) Final Fantasy 9
iii) Final Fantasy 5 (I love the job system, I really do)
iv) Final fantasy Tactics
v) Final Fantasy 6 (I know this is higher up on most people's lists, but I just couldn't get into it)

8 is somewhere down the bottom... but that's a whole nother rant :P

A remake would be nice, I would like a graphical update to FFVII and FFVIII. Although, we should have the erase option too, as in, erase X-2 and (kill me) FFIX. What a waste of talent...

I'd like to know what was so wrong with ff9? It's my personal second favourite O.o

If you go into winamp (there may be another route) you can configure the plug-in to have songs play indefinetly... or at least till the game issues a STOP command (as in when it would normally end) :P

You could also hit escape then enter, but I suppose it's a bit late for that :P

I like how the completely unrelated question was answered, and not the original one :P

Tain: You might want to try downloading "FF7MUSIC" to get the game to play the original playstation music rather than the crappy midi renders... I don't have a link on-hand but I'm sure you can find it if you use the search function!

I had this problem as well and the "upside-down movie" patch did indeed fix it (huzzah!)

General Discussion / Sumimasen?
« on: 2005-09-15 02:05:17 »
I apologize if this belongs in tech-related but I admit I'm curious

In FF7 what is the purpose of the "Sumimasen!" location? Some kind of battle test or the equivalent of KotOR II's "I am broken, so very broken" name change?

For some reason, your game is being played in 32 bit color.  Sounds like you're using the 32-bit color patch, and/or the "windowed" mode patch.  Disable these and try again.

A bit late (uni frosh week, sorry) but no I'm not using either... only patch I'm using is the Music patch and half of the battle model conversion (just for the world map, I don't like how it looks in the town/dungeon maps... not that it isn't a good idea)

Did you try the 1280*1024 resoultion patch?

EDIT (wow, a day later, haha):  My friend has a widescreen Dell XPS (1900*1220) and it seems to work great.  I'd recommend giving it a try. :)

What the Dell or the resolution? :P

And yeah I did try the patch and it doesn't work... I get the same problem.

I have a suspicion that your monitor just doesn't support the 1280x960 resolution and is therefore choosing the next best.
Do me a favour and list all the resolutions that your monitor supports. (The ones that appear in your display properties)

It supports 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1280x1024 (I guess this is where the problem lies?) 1440x900... any higher and it starts needing to scroll to accomodate the large desktop (1600x1200, 1792x1344, 1800x1440, 1920x1080, 120x1200, 1920x1440 and 2048x1536)

If you could provide me a picture, or a screenshot, I might be able to help.
Also, if you could tell me the closest resolution which is native to your aspect ratio, then I could pad it out on with black bars.

Here's a literal photograph of the screen (printscrn gave me a completely normal image, so I had to use my camera :P)... The native resolution of my monitor is 1440 x 900 which I somehow think isn't too common (hence my earlier comment that I doubted it would be fixed)

Thanks a mil for hearing me out... it's cool to see people actively working on a game this old (but hey, it's still good!)

Just something to note, though I doubt it'll be fixed, since it's something that's probably pretty uncommon

... this patch does not work for widescreens at all. On the right edge there's a kind of matrix-esque floating texture (which doesn't intersect the actual game-play area) and it goes too far below the edge of the screen at the ottom (about halfway into the combat menus)

I've got to run but if it's wanted I'll post screenshots later.

again, I know this is probably pretty uncommon (I'm playing on a laptop) so no worries, and kudos for making it work for normal PCs!

Archive / FF7PC compilation DVD?
« on: 2005-09-01 23:23:35 »
Well... I got them to copy by cleaning the discs really well and using a different, newer burner...

corpse: I tried what you suggested but I really don't trust NoCD cracks for a game this old... on the two occasions I've tried, they've skipped videos and generally acted strange, so I decided I was better off just doing a straight rip again. Thanks though!

So I'm now the owner of a legal backup copy and can play without worrying about destroying my discs... I'm happy! :D

Now to try those hi-res patches I've read about!

Would it be possible to copy only the files? My CDs are damaged to the point where a direct copy (to an image) fails due to bad sectors (the game still runs though)

Archive / FF7PC compilation DVD?

Is it possible to compile all of the FF7 disks into one mega-dvd, to eliminate disc switching and such? I mean, I do have the original disks and all but they're already scratched to hell and I don't want to run the risk of ruining the game entirely by overusing them (I love this game :P)

Can anyone help me?
