newb with little computer knowledge
« on: 2008-03-28 03:47:45 »
i am VERY new to working with files like these and having to extract, copy, move, replace, configure, decompress etc. is really difficult for me to do since i dont know exactly what some of these commands do as well as the fact that some of the instructions are clear to some people but not me for example: using YAMP "unpack" then copy to ff7 folder, i do not understand 3 things in that statement 1: by folder does it mean i just copy the folder itself to it or do i just go INSIDE folder and copy only what i want? 2: where exactly do i put them in the ff7 folder? do i just throw it in there randomly? usualy there's a specific spot that i put them. 3: when it asks me to "unpack the patches" what does that mean? im guessing it means i open them but if so then to what degree do i open the files? if anyone can help me to further understand the complicated world of computers i would be really greatful

Well, you could also look at the screenshots in the support thread. If there are any error messages which aren't self-explanatory, post them here - we might figure it out.

From the linked thread - the first sentence in the "Usage" section:
Quote
Download YAMP and patches you want to apply, unpack them and copy to your FF7 folder.

Each patch comes in a package. It's a RAR file. This file (f.e. MGP.rar, 9999LB.rar, ...) should be unpacked (use any program that can unpack RAR files, WinRAR for example). And that's it. You don't unpack files any further. You just put SRB and TXT files in the patches folder and run install.bat.

WinRAR would be easiest to use imo, it's a simple case of an easy interface, click where you want the files extracted to, and your sorted.

You could've just tried that... Don't be afraid to try, you won't break your PC trying to unpack files.

well from what i can understand i think to unpack them i'm supposed to extract the files? and if that is the case it won't let me and always says :CANNOT OPEN (insert patch here, in this particular case YAMP/9999lb SRB file as well as the other non text files) but it may be the fact that i downloaded all of the patches via utorrent so i may try downloading a single patch and seeing if i can't open those files, or i may try

to all of you who is currently helping me thank you VERY much, i know that it must be hard to deal with a guy who hardly understands computers let alone programs he's NEVER used before.
so again thank you for continueing to help me :-D

ok...i just figured out what to do with the YAMP...and i know what to do with the other patches...but NOW i have to learn about the infamous black screen problem...so i downloaded it and i see what i have to disable but just as i feel relieved i look it up just to make sure and what do i see? yet another problem that is apparently infamous, which is the gold saucer date scene which apparently messes up alot so now im wondering....exactly HOW MANY PROBLEMS DOES THIS GAME HAVE THAT I'LL HAVE TO WORK AROUND???? (im just using caps as a kind of ironic thing im not really that angry but i am a little bit frustrated) so if anyone could explain any well known problems other than the black screen and how to deal with them i'd be greatly relived...again

How many problems? Seeing that you're already at Gold Saucer, only ~4 more problems left :P It's just how the FF7 is. Great storyline, great music, lots of bugs. Might be silly, but that's why there are so many people still working on it - because FF7 needs it, and deserves it.

In case you haven't already looked it up, use gyptNEW to bypass that date scene.

well i haven't played the game just yet i'm still waiting on it but i decided that i would make sure that i knew what i was doing before i started to just try random things, and so during this week and last week i have been looking up some forums and going as far as i could with the patches so thati  would know what needed to be done before i encountered the problems, but the thing is that everytime i figure out how to get around one problem....a new one shows up to replace it, in this example i just figured out what i needed to know about the truemotion codec....at least i hope so and then i later see that there is a problem with the date scene at gold saucer but i haven't ACTUALLY played the game yet because if you didn't know i decided to order a pc version soley because i saw all of the great things you can do with it on the pc version. so anyway i'm hoping/praying that it won't come to downloading another patch to get around the problems. and one more thing i noticed is that i'm supposed to download something called "duck.exe" but there are 2 problems with that, 1:it says in the descriptions that the programm is riddled with worms, trojans, and malware, 2: i'm not really sure if i need it so i wanna ask: do i really need to download duck.exe to get around the infamous black screen?

The file on the InstallCD should be enough (in the FF7 install menu you choose ?Movie Player?), and if it's not, download upside-down movie patch here. Also, read about ffdshow thing (it's also in the linked thread).
