Final Fantasy 14!
« on: 2010-08-12 13:28:30 »
I was wondering if anyone was a fan of the new final fantasy coming out it looks really good. I was planning on playing it on my laptop but after seeing how high end graphics this game is I don't even know if I will be able to play it =(. Here is the benchmark in case anyone wants to see how well they can run the game.  http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/benchmark/na/  I only scored a 1903 on my Asus G60jx so I'm not to sure what to do yet. I was thinking about posting pictures of the inside of my laptop to see if anyone would be able to help me change my processor to a core i7 build so if anyone has experience with that could you please let me know =).  Sorry for just saying random things but this thread is here basically just to talk about Final Fantasy 14 and to possibly help me out so I could actually play it lol.

Haha I totally would if I could return my laptop but its to late now. I am really happy with the G60jx though FF14 is just insane. You think I could put a core i7 like the one you have in yours in the G60jx?

First of all >gaming on a laptop

Secondly, the graphics card is more likely to be your problem than the processor. If you upgrade your i5 to an i7, you're unlikely to see much of a difference, if any.

Thirdly, are you asking if someone can help you upgrade your laptop's processor? AFAIK, laptops have very little room for upgrades when it comes to hot, power consuming components like CPUs and GPUs. They usually have only just enough power and only just enough cooling to deal with the parts they were built with. You'd probably find that you'd have even worse overheating and battery life problems than gaming laptops usually have if you upgraded the processor. I'm not saying it's impossible, but don't be disappointed if you run into problems.

Looking into it a bit further it seems like the core i7-720qm was available as an option on that laptop. So it should be possible to put one of these in if you can get your hands on one. But as kudistos said the graphics card is most likely holding you back.

I play FF14, and yes the graphics card is definitely the main problem.
It really depends on how good you want the game to look, it's all configurable.
If you want to play with Ambient Occlusion and Depth of Field options on, you will want an awesome card.

Would any of you know if there is even a graphics card that I can replace it with? I tried doing some research on my own and I saw something called GTX 480M. I believe that's better but I have no idea if it will fit or if its even possible at all.

@ Kudistos Megistos
I know gaming on a laptop is just not the way to go but unfortunately I do not have much of a choice because I will be at school and all I have is this laptop.

@ sl1982
Have you tried the benchmark with the G73jh? I'm curious to see how well it does

Wow that is amazing. I wonder if I could put in the type of graphics card that you have. Also you have just reminded me that overclocking is an option. Would it be difficult or dangerous to overclock the Nvidia GTS 360m that I have? or even my cpu for that matter? Because honestly I have no knowledge of even how to do it and I rather not break my computer lol. Thanks for everyones help and quick responses by the way.

I wouldnt advise it. As for upgrading the gpu... not sure. I do know that asus reverses the pinout of the mxm module so you would have to get an asus one if you were to try. Good luck finding one though.

Alright, I guess I will see what I can do it just seems rather difficult I almost feel like selling this thing and getting a new one would be easier haha. So just to make things clear even if I try to upgrade the ram to 8GB instead of 4 and put in the core i7 my computer won't show much difference for the money spent to do so?

No. And this is one of the reasons why I felt forced to greentext you when you mentioned playing it on a laptop. ;D

Is playing FF14 really worth spending hundreds of dollars? Hell, if you sell your current laptop and upgrade to one that will play it, you might be down by $500-$1000 for one game.

Just to ask, apart from me, does anyone else think that making a main-numbered Final Fantasy game an MMORPG (which is completely different to what an FF game has been since the original on the NES and to what an FF game should be) is a complete f*cking discrace to the name Final Fantasy? No? Just me?

Not hating on MMORPG's, I quite enjoy them whenever I do play them. And actually I'd be fine with these FF ones if they were named something like "Final Fantasy: Online". But I really detest the fact that they're just not proper Final Fantasy games, whatever way you spin it - and yet they're allowed to have a true FF title.

Not just you.

However, it's obvious that Squeenix don't care about disgracing the Final Fantasy name in order to sell a crappy game and haven't done for a long time.

Maybe they'll reconsider remaking FF7 if people don't buy or play their new game FF14 but I guess their are hardcore fans who loves anything from Square-Enix.

which reminds me (this may just be wishful thinking) you know how theres a new world map you can travel on in versus 13? anyone else think it may be a test, see if the new one is well taken?
