FFVIII Disk Error
« on: 2010-08-25 14:47:52 »
Been a while since I posted here...anyways, I went to a friends house who still had the game, copied the images of his games so now I have all the ISO's and it's been giving me this "Wrong disk" error...Do I need to patch it?  I looked around and found some forum telling me to go into my regedit, which I did and I couldn't find the "Squaresoft" folder in the software part.  So any idea's guys?  I do hope I posted this in the right place.

So you posted here asking us how to get an admittedly illegally copied game to work? Read the rules. You're going to get warned/watched for this.

How...exactly is that illegal?  I didn't torrent or download the game, my friend doesn't loan it out so I had to do this instead.  I would GLADLY use the original disks but I can't, he's a prick and won't let me.

He owns a copy of the game. You do not. Making a copy of a friend's discs is just as illegal as downloading them. It's only legal to make a backup copy of YOUR OWN DISCS, and even then you must dispose of the backup if you sell or give away the original discs.

So instead of being a prick, why couldn't the guy before just explain that to me before?  Was it really that difficult to type what you just said?  Thanks for the clarity, I've already removed the game and gave up.

Or, you could have, you know, read the forum rules before posting.

Failpost is fail.

He already made it clear he didn't realize it was illegal if he made the copy himself. The rules do not clarify this matter.

Oh, if I could say what I WANT to say to this then I'd get modded for impersonating Judge Judy and excessive caps.  :-X

My part in this conversation is over. Interpret that as you will.

He already made it clear he didn't realize it was illegal if he made the copy himself. The rules do not clarify this matter.

Unfortunately, the onus is on him to work out what is and isn't illegal. More to the point, the problem was his attitude toward NFITC1.

I'm tempted to say:

Quote
We don't have to help you. So show some bloody respect. Considering how restrained and neutral the original reply was, I think he needs a kick up the ****.

Still, if you're happy to invite the scores of clueless newbies, demanding advice despite having so far given nothing in return, flailing their arms about when someone has the temerity to neutrally warn them that their post is technically moddable, well... you can guess I won't be agreeing on that one.

You see, this is the issue across all support boards - from GameFAQs to Stack Overflow. People not getting it into their heads that they're the ones asking for everyone else's time, and need to eat a bit of humble pie. I honestly don't care how frustrated they are. Even if a vet vents, flames or is just plain rude, you accept that because you're asking for his time.

Is this personal deference towards NFITC1? Am I saying, 'one rule for the contributors, another for the noobs'? Am I being elitist? Damn right! There are people who slog their guts out helping others with their queries, and what do they get in return? Fail mail, whiny support requests and thread tantrums. Sure, I'm still a neophyte, but at least I try and bloody contribute in return. And if Akari called me a twit, I'd apologize for irritating him, not hurl childish abuse his way.

I'm guessing you're about to rattle off a quickshot reply, but wait a second. Haven't you ever felt that way? He was in no position to call NFITC1 a 'prick', and if he wants technical support here (or elsewhere), then he better rethink his attitude.

Perhaps so, but the fact that he at least THOUGHT what he was doing was legal would suggest that he had in fact read the rules. So telling him to read them is still useless.

I'm inclined to look the other way on the legality of borrowing a friend's game.   I've borrowed (and still have) countless games from friends, and i doubt the long arm of SE (or anyone else) is going to beat in my door demanding receipts and explanations.   If and when they do, I'll have officially given up hope for "freedom".

Unfortunately, look this way once, and you'll find scores of previously warned posters returning to 'borrow' a 'friend's' game.

Borrowing is one thing, but copying a friend's game so they both have a copy is undeniably illegal. I defended him before because I got the impression he thought he was staying within the law, but now he's been told, and he knows better.

In other words, I'm defending his intentions, not his previous actions. If he straight up borrowed the game rather than copying it, I'd be happy to help him as well, because I agree with you about borrowing.
