need help with FF7 PLEASE!
« on: 2002-03-07 21:18:00 »
Okay, I am getting really ticked off at all you people in here who can make FF7 work like a charm... mine has stopped working ever since I installed WinXP PRO...

Okay, here's my specs:
Geforce2 MX
SB LIVE!
256 ram
30 GB HDD primary use + 80 GB for my movies
16x12x40 CD-RW
12x DVD
19" monitor
blah blah, etc. etc...

Now, my problem:
I installed ff7 full install and installed the directshow drivers (as per ordered in other topics I have read).  I installed the nvidia patch and tried to run ff7, but one of two things always happen:

1.  (When 'Nvidia mode' is checked off)  The screen goes black, i can HEAR my monitor change resolutions, then my WinXP desktop comes back, with no trace of ff7 being open.

2. (When 'Nvidia mode' is disabled, but 'direct3d' is still activated)  The screen goes black, and I soon get an hour glass (in 640x480 res) and windows makes an error sound behind the black screen.  If I hit escape a couple times, then I get my desktop back, with no ff7 instance open.  It is impossible to alt-tab out of the black screen...

can ANYONE help me???  I love this game so much and can't play it...  :isee:   If you have an answer, PLEASE EMAIL it to me as well as posting it here, because I might not remember to check back here often...

Yowzers.... Im really sorry for having to post the following, as it will most likely confuse and disorient all who read it, but It may be related to my problem...

I decided to try hitting ENTER when i get the error message instead of escape, and it took me to what looked like a SEVERLY buggy divx file (ex. lots of LARGE, brightly colored pastel pixels), and I soon got an error message that I COULD see, though I prefer not to quote it due to its longevity, i will say that it has to do with some indexing file i think, and it asks me if I want to DEBUG it (I have the debugging version of directX 8.1 sdk installed).  I say, no and I get to a perfectly normal screen of the main menu.  It only freezes on cinema files, and I finally realized that this is strikingly similar to an error message that I get on a select few of my divx files, and that it has been happening to me ever since i decided to use the DEBUG version of the SDK... I am now going to uninstall the SDK and reinstall the NORMAL version, not the debug version to see if it helps... any help would still be recommended (ageements with my assumptions, etc.) just in case this doesnt work... WISH ME LUCK AND HELP!

xp pro comes with the latest direct x, so you should go back to that.

download the upside-down video patch and run it.

that made it work for me (with my GF4). but anyway, its basically pointless becuase it crashes at the chocobo races. There currently isnt a fix for this.

Yeah, Darkness is right. Now matter how cool or powerful your system is, SSJ4_Flash, the simple fact is that if you DO get it working, it won't work pass the chocobo race. This is a problem that has existed with FF7 since Win2000, and there's currently nothing we can do. There is no patch, hack or anything that has been able to correct this problem.

And if such a thing existed on the internet, someone here would have a copy of it before long, and then we'd all have it.

Again, sorry to disappoint you.

Also: if you's the last person to add something to a topic, and you need to add something, just edit your old post. Don't post again. We frown on that type of thing.

Yes, I realize this, but thankfully I started my game before I had windows XP, and I copied my save-game files, wich bring me to the Temple of the Ancients...  Now, however, I am reformatting my computer (kind of a routine thing, really...) and I will keep trying to fix ff7...

It's been known for ff7 to not work on Windows Xp very well or at all.  Even if you do get it working it freezes at the Chocobo races.  Sorry to tell you that  SSJ4_Flash.  :(

Yeah FF7 most always runs fine in Windows XP (well, depends on your graphics cards, some have problems), but the Chocobo Races is a no-fix.  Virtual PC can be used to get by them (but its SLOW) or you can dual-boot with Windows 98 (easy) or transfer your file to a different computer for the races.

But it won't work in Windows XP for the Chocobo Races.  Period.

Ironic too, replying to the last post which asked not to revive dead topics... :) That nominates you for the Ignorance Award, Relf. ;)
