Two probs with FF7 on Win7 x64..
« on: 2010-10-11 00:36:32 »
Firstly, my PC randomly turns off while playing at times. Not a shutdown, but just an instant off. Now, I'm not sure if this is actually related to FF7 in any way, but it doesn't happen any other time... :/ I also couldn't find any reports of related hardware faults for this specific model, although there are some for the brand in general. <EDIT: Forgot to mention before. This only ever happens during battles.>

Secondly, the frame rate limiter in the motorbike minigame isn't working. (I'm using the custom graphics driver, and the framerate limiter option is on). Everything else seems to be working fine. (Obviously, I'm not yet far enough to try the other minigames.)

I'm on Win7 Ultimate x64, using FF7 1.02 with the custom graphics driver, the only mods I've installed is gjoerulv's hard mod and FF7music (which also has a minor but tolerable issue; the music doesn't loop properly whether using PSF or the looping OGGs, they just fade out then start again after a while, also, music doesn't stop as it's meant to).

I applied the old minigames patch and it fixes the problems with the motorbike game, so I guess that means for those who it isn't fixed by the graphics driver, you can still use that one alongside it... still, isn't the driver meant to fix it?

First, don't double post.  Secondly, I am not sure what could cause an instant off other than perhaps hardware fault (like memory or graphic card) or severe overheating which causes bios to shut your computer off.

Instant shut offs are usually a sign of overheating and/or a failing power supply as the PSU is designed to shut off to prevent damage to the main components..

Sorry. I'm used to GameFAQs, which doesn't have an edit feature, so I don't always think to use it, especially when I'm adding entirely new content like that.

Anyway, it seems it is indeed an overheat-protection issue. Not quite sure why only FF7 triggers it though.

Any advice on the other problems? (While the minigame patch is sufficient for me, I'm guessing that if the driver's meant to fix it by itself, I'm either setting things wrong or there's an issue the creator needs to know about... and I wouldn't mind tips on FF7music.)

How did you set up FF7Music? Whether you used the installer, or did it manually, can help me determine what the cause of those problems might be.

Honestly, it sounds like it's not really using PSFs, if they're fading out.

I used the installer. Both the supposedly-looping OGGs and the PSFs have this problem.

Huh... In FF7Music's config, configure your input plugin (vgmstream) and choose "Loop Forever". Tell me if that fixes looping for OGGs.

Goddamnit. Can't believe I missed that.

That really just leaves the question (which isn't exactly critical, as another patch fixes it) of why the video driver isn't fixing the minigames... (or at least, not the bike one. I've applied the patch that fixes the bike and the snowboard, I'll let you know if anything happens when I get to the chocobo race).

EDIT: Configuring the plugin works for PSF, but not the OGGs - the setting reverts once I click to save it (not from the plugin config itself, if I OK it there then go back in it's fine, but as soon as I save the FF7Music settings altogether, it reverts).
