Anyone familiar with Academic Decathlon (USAD)?
« on: 2010-10-27 21:01:54 »
Well most people here are from the USA, and most people here would probably be labeled geeks/nerds w/e, so I was wondedring if anyone else here participated in Academic Decathlon when they were in high school?  It is basically the nerd olympics and involves lots of test taking on college-level material which needs to be crammed into a few month period.  Also, there are essays, interviews, and speeches (prepared and impromptu).  It was really fun, and it would be strange if no one else participated in it.

Speeches kick ass. Seriously, mix in a bit of stand up comedy, and even a crappy speech turns to pure gold.

I was too lazy to participate in anything other than theatre in high school (was the Dentist in little shop of horrors), but I'm certainly familiar with it all.

Well most people here are from the USA

I don't think this is true at all.

and most people here would probably be labeled geeks/nerds w/e,

This is true, but the percentage isn't as big as you'd think...

so I was wondedring if anyone else here participated in Academic Decathlon when they were in high school?  It is basically the nerd olympics and involves lots of test taking on college-level material which needs to be crammed into a few month period.  Also, there are essays, interviews, and speeches (prepared and impromptu).  It was really fun, and it would be strange if no one else participated in it.

I think I'd be far too geeky for that. It sounds like more of a thing for the "I'm privately educated and have pushy parents" kind of academic person than the "I'm a nerd" kind. Hell, there's no way I could give a speech in front of a lot of people, especially if it's impromptu. I'd be able to say "Hello" and that would be it.

That is what it was like for most schools.  I was in a small redneck school and it was basically an extension of the gifted program because those are the only students that did any good lol.  However, it was an extremely fun event and I learned 10x more in decathlon than in my general classes.  Public and private schools could both participate and it was seperated into divisions based on GPA.

Yeah, my brother was in it when he was in high school.  I could've been too, if I wasn't lazy and actually bothered to do any work.  It's mostly easy-ass shit.  Oh well.

That's where the divisions come in.  As the lazy stoner kid, I was in the 'Varsity' category which was GPA < 3.00  Everyone sucked in this category, so I just had to skim the material a few days before the tounament and auto-win many shiny medals  8-) If my GPA was higher then I wouldn't have bothered.

Oh, they only counted like English, Math, Science, and History to determine your GPA, my As in Home Ec (all we did was make delicious cookies everyday) and Phys. Ed. didn't count lol.

Yeah, I was the lazy kid with a 1.4 GPA (mind you, my school did that GPA thing that goes up to 5.0... mine should've been a 5.0, but as I said, I didn't do a damn thing)..

Now I'm just the lazy stoner adult, who works at white castle, and may get an IT job for them soon, because I was able to tell the district manager the boot sequence of the cash registers by watching them...  Impressed him a good deal.
