ff7 WORKING IN XP WITH A GEFORCE 3
« on: 2002-03-14 09:32:00 »
yes i finally did it!!!
i have these specs
geforce 3
athlon 1700xp
ibm60g hdd
512ddr
soundblaster audigy
and this setup
FF7 v1.2
ff7 config 1.2 NVIDA TNT CHECKED IN OPTIONS!!
win xp home
detonator xp 23.12 (downloaded from windows update)
Riva tuner RC10.xx (get it from http://www.warp2search.net)

i did the following
opened rivatuner when to texture settings for direct3d and for dx7 apps DISABLED 8bit pallatized textures
so i fail the test in ff7config, but i have to check the tnt box to bypass it!
and it works woooohooo
check these pics for what i did
(40k each)

Here's a direct link to the RivaTuner, for those who wish to try and copy Skillster's sucess. I'm going to try it with my system & Win2k, so I'll post my sucess or failure a bit later.

Skillster: Great news, and nice screenshots. Now can we get some in-game screen shots? And do we still have the issue with the chocobos? "Working" is such a reletive term on this board...

Edit: Well, my experiment ended in failure. I still crash when I enter a battle. Plus it take a LONG time to get out of transitions. The only way I can get out of the trans is to go to the menu screen, then out.  And then it my computer's thinking about every single step, so I tend to freeze a bit on the overworld map.

So to recap: This method doesn't work with Win2k + sp2 using the TNT mode, Detenator XP drivers, and the Rivatuner. Further study is reccomended.

just a thought here...

Hey, call me crazy, but in win2k, shouldnt you use drivers besides detonator XP?  Somthing maybe more along the lines of, like, Detonator for win2k?  I really dont know if XP drivers are supposed to work on all systems... correct me if im wrong, plz   :isee:

Win2K and XP are similar systems, architecturally. Drivers for one should be able to work on the other, unless the manufacturer has chosen to disable that for some reason (by default, they would, in the same way that Win95 drivers work on Win98).

THE Latest rivatuner DOES work with gf4, and yes the same drivers from nvidia.com work with xp and 2000, but in theory 2000 drivers work with xp (heh, howd i run my gf3 on the xp beta? with 2000 drivers of course).
ive been playing with RIVATUNER's FORCE texture filtering option (in the same area as the palletised texture option), and filtering levels 8 & 4 produce filtered BUT broken backgrounds (as everyone normally gets) but  levels 2 filters the background and NOT the movies (unlike lvls 4&8), and level 1 (BILINEAR) DOESNT filter backgrounds, BUT u get a slightly rounder TEXT (abut weirder but still legible) and level 0 (NEAREST POINT) is ur standard filtering in ff7.

WHAT i did notice between levels 1 & 0 in battles (after a very close inspection in a bitmap editor!) is that level 1 provides are much FARTHER depth of filtering on 3d floors wall etc. meaning normal filtering stops after a certain distance into the background in battles, with forced level 1 continues to filter in to the distance (nicer for larger monitors!)

Can u provide me with a save? i cant be bothered running from sector 7 in disc 1 to their in disc 2
---------
more info
ive been playing with the FSAA
ive noticed the following
ANY strength of FSAA will kill the background and corrupt text
BUT if u have the detonators 23.xx and the latest rivatuner
YOU CAN HAVE AA in FF7, u have to ENABLE Multisample MASK AND texture filtering FORCE level 1(BILINEAR) then u can :
use 2x2 FSAA to get 3d AA,
use 4x4 or Quincunx or higher to get filtered 2d menus and AA 3d
ENJOY , tell me if it works for u :)

Yeah...  FF7 crashes in Windows XP at the Chocobo Races, and unless someone comes up with some kind of patch (unlikely)... that's the way it'll always be.
