What about FF9?
« on: 2011-02-26 21:06:33 »
Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I've noticed that there are only 2 games discussed here - FF7 and FF8, but there were no restrictions in the rules and FAQ's about asking questions related to other games.
My favorite game is Final Fantasy 9 - I have it for PS1, replayed it on the PS2 and on the PSP.  I simply love it,.. and if it ever get a remake for the PS3 - I would surely die out of pure excitement.
My question is - has anyone here worked on it or is this a forum only for the PC released versions?
I'm a Bulgarian and I would really like to translate the game in my language. I already know this is not an easy task, so no need to remind me that. Believe me - I know.
I've seen a lot of work being done for the FF7 and FF8 in Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Some other PS1 games translated, and then - FF9 in Russian!!! So Russian and Bulgarian are very similar. They come from the same alphabet - Cyrillic. Normally I wouldn't even bother to try to change a PS1 game from Latin to Cyrillic, but that doesn't seem to be an obstacle. Except - I can't even open the damn game files.
I'm a translator, not a hacker, (I do my PS3 PSP and PC hackin' no problem) but man - PS games are tough. I just need a kickstart.
I got these various PS and PC instruments that so far have been useless to me. When I open the FF9 BIN file I get this FF9 IMG file inside it along with all the STReam folders. So I need to open up this IMG file which (kill me if I'm wrong) contains the game data. But so far - nothing! I can't find a tool for extracting whatever files might be in there. An I'm mainly interested in the dialogs in the game.
Can you please help me?
SOMEBODY in Russia did it! Problem is I can't find them. They call themselves RGR Studio. They make fine translations of PS games in Russian, BUT I can't find a site or e-mail, or any kind of link or info about WHO THE F.CK THEY ARE!
If you know them or know how they do it please, please tell me :'(

In short: Goal: FF9 translated from English to Bulgarian. Tools? Tutorial?
Problems: Img file inside the Bin file? Where is the all the dialog contained?
Who are these RGR Studio, and how did they do it for FF7 FF8 and FF9 ?

While there isn't a rule against FF9 here, it's much more difficult to hack a game if there isn't already a PC version. I don't think we have any ff9-specific tools, but you might find something useful at http://www.romhacking.net

We are fine with discussion about FF9.

The reason why we don't talk about it very much is because reverse engineering and modding PSX games is harder than playing around with PC games. It isn't impossible, but it's more difficult and there's a limit to what you can do. You certainly couldn't have a FF9 equivalent of the TA project, for example.

Unfortunately, unless you can somehow make contact with that Russian group you mentioned, you may have to learn how to do some reverse engineering yourself before you can translate the game into Bulgarian.

Have you tried asking at any forums dedicated to PSX hacking? They might be able to give you some useful pointers.

Whoa, quick reply you dudes :)
I've already been to that site. Problem is the PSX tools that can get close to viewing anything in the FF series are just for images, sound and video extraction. Even reverse engineering requires some kind of tool for reading the sneaky protected files. You can't work with something that you can't see. I'm no genius - I can't write my own PSX FF9 extractor.
Besides somebody out there knows exactly how to do it. THEY must be really good. Maybe some Japanese from Square Enix original team ;D

This. It's very sad there isn't more of an FF9 interest. But it is harder and there aren't that many tools to get started with.

If FF9 is your favourite game, why don't you make some tools for it? ;D

I've been thinking about it, actually. I just haven't gotten started yet.

I love FF9 so much, I'd be happy to help whereever I can. A 'while' ago I played around with gameshark codes and re-created almost all spells. If I could find a way to apply those changes to the actual ISO instead of using codes, that'd be one step ahead already.

There is a file dumper on this forum, as well as a battle scene viewer. Copy and paste of what I wrote on another forum while I find the actual posts:

Oh, crap. :-\They don't run.
Under what environment do you run these tools. Win7 no good?

Usage:
FF9_img_extractor.exe <full path to ff9.img> <path to out dir> ??
How do you type that in cmd?
Or not for cmd at all?

Read the articles about FF9. My little brain hurts :o
Anyway, I'm personally interested only in the dialogs in the game, so it shouldn't be so complicated for me.
But where could they be?

aside from that I tried to register in a Russian PS forum with virtually every single PS game translated in Ru.
Bummer :o They got this system where you can't register unless you answer 8! questions from their Rules in Russian! Good thing I know the language.
Problem is not every answer is IN the Rules. Those crazy Russians. I tried about a 100 times and failed!
The forum looks very clean inside for a reason. ;D
