[FF7PC] Enhanced Movies (2011-03-13)
« on: 2011-03-10 18:35:39 »
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?5oxns4oj1mgny

I know that there already is project like this but I do this for testing my enlargement technique and for my own use. So I just want to post some screens from my work and if anybody here want to use these movies I can upload them.

Original movies had 320x224 res. For enhanced I just doubled the resolution. The size is almost same like originial even with doubled resolution. For video I use xvid 2pass encoding and for audio microsoft adpcm.

For better comparsion I also resized the original footage with classic bicubic sharp method to match new movie size 640x448. Images are taken directly from movies. Here are some samples:

Impressive, does this work on regular images as well?

They seem to lose some detail but they almost have a cel shaded look to them. I am curious to see what they would look like at 4x the originals.

Are you using the FFVII PC videos as source? Probably not a good idea.

Every resizing method have some disadvantages. Perfect method doesn't exist. My goal was to remove most of artifacts from compression and apply alnitalias like filter (more like median) image to remove jaggy edges that was caused by resize but without blurring image. It's not perfect method and it works best with painted or cartoon stuff because it makes image looks little plastic. Don't forget that these images are taken directly from compressed movies so artefacts you speak about maybe caused by xvid compression apllied on them. :P

You did that using the PC fmvs? If so, that's quite an impressive result.

These are my favourite so far, I like the effect of the enhancement. Seems more cartoon-like. You should post one on YouTube so we can see it in action!

Here 2 movies as a preview

I'm not satisfied with all movies. Some of them looks quite good and some may not. As I said before if anybody want them I can upload all of them.

I like them. The original Highwind one was very dark. I like yours; using both of them. TBH, I however don't think I'd want them all like that. They almost have a more cartoonish (Animeish?) look to them. For example I wouldn't want the Aerith death scene like that. If you post them all though, I'll download it.  8-)

Could you perhaps give us some insight into what programs you are using to upconvert and enhance these videos? I would like to experiment with the field backgrounds to see if it is better then what I am using right now.

I am liking where this is going. It may look more cartoonish, but maybe it could be toned down somehow to prevent that, even though it might reduce quality?

I would be interesting to see what it does for field backgrounds.

For anyone who want these movies here are the links:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=44FQNDWF Movies part 1 (59 files)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TP5LC4F0 Movies part 2 (38 files)

Files not included: fcar.avi(since it looks same as car_1209), eidoslgogo.avi, explode.avi, fship2.avi, last4_2.avi, last4_3.avi and white2.avi.

Programs used photoshop and virtualdub.

2 BloodShot: I think not because it will make jagged edges  Only if the enhanced image will be used as blend layer with decreased opacity.

Simply incredible.  The edges are sharp as hell.  I noticed that texture detail is lost though.  The edge threshold seems a little high but with such low quality videos perhaps that's the right decision.  It certainly looks better to me.

Wow this is quite impressive! I would now feel the need to press "print screen" during the showing of some of these and save it as wallpaper.  :P

I really like the look on these :)
I woulda never found them but I cant get the recent full set of FMVs out on the forum to work. Interestingly, these do-and they look really wonderful compared to what im used to. thanks!

-actually, on further review the opening works and some of the other videos do not ;p doing further testing for lack of something better to do.
