FF VII "All characters" patch ?
« on: 2011-05-22 12:15:06 »
Hello,

I have a question about FF7 patches in general, I don't know if it has already been asked and I apologize in advance if it has.

I would like to know if there is some kind of patch/mod for FF7 PC that allows you to play with Sephiroth and Aeris as you want to.

The idea is that Cloud remains the main character of the game, and when you select your 2 other team members you can choose between any of the classic game charactes, plus Sephiroth and Aeris (after CD1).

I know that this has been made for Aeris, but I haven't seen something similar for Sephiroth (I'm not interested in the Sephiroth patch as it replaces Cloud), or for both.

My question therefore is : does such a patch exists or is under progress ?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

PS: An even better patch (but probably much more challenging to make) would be one where we can replace Cloud by any other character at any moment of the game, for example having a Aeris/Tifa/Yuffie team.

Sephiroth and Vincent can't be used at the same time since they share data, so you'd have to have one or the other.

I think I've found a way to play as whoever you want to...but it could be a bit weird though, you'd have to reprogram all of the characters to get it to work. I remember when I was making the Aeris patch, I had planned for you to be able to play as either Aeris or Cid for the attack on Corel and Fort Condor. I had to give in because it was way to complicated, there was way to much to change.

I'll give it another try, see what happens.

most of what you want can be done by editing your save game... except that aeris has no lines after a certan point(hence ultima espiro's aeris mod), and sephiroth will remain computer controlled(since thats in the kernel). see black chocobo for more. you might beable to export sephiroth and add him to another chars slot but i've not tried that and i don't know how the game will handle it.

to allow cloud to be put in the phs pool you have to go the the "other" tab in BC and check his name off for allowed in phs pool. just note if you do that the only other chars who can show on the world map are tifa and cid. So if you don't have one of them in your party you will see cloud on world map.

That Black Chocobo mod looks really awesome, seems like you can basically do whatever you want with it. Thanks sithlord48.

The only problem remains with Sephiroth. Ultima espio, how about replacing one character by Sephiroth ? (for example Cait Sith who's very ugly and useless imo).

Basically, it'd be something like what has been done in the Sephi patch, but in a more simple way (since you "just" have to change the model of Cait Sith in game, in battle and his picture in the menu).

We could therefore have all the characters except Cait Sith (or another one we don't plan on playing with) and we could even control Sephiroth in battle. There'd be some minor problems like the limit breaks (and probably many others), but that seems possible, right ?

there was something going on to replace cait with someone else a long time ago, its no where near that easy.

I beg to differ.

He has it almost right, but all he needs to do to finish would be to kill the limit breaks off to ensure the game doesn't crash, and change the field animations. He could be able to just change 6 for the game to continue flawlessly.

Both of which take almost no time to actually do.

The interesting thing about Cait Sith and Red 13's field models is that they have very few unique animations, and if you replace the skeleton type for another character and replace the corresponding animation, it will work perfectly.

For it to work mostly, you could just replace the walking, getting ready to attack, idle and running animation cait sith has, and for the others, use the idle animation if there isn't a version the other character uses.

As for killing the limit break, that can be optional, but you change the initial data for Cait Sith (which is in the exe IIRC) for him to start with level 0 limit breaks instead of level 1, and because the first level of limit breaks can't be unlocked through kills, he will never have a single limit break.

Thus ensuring the game won't crash in battle when you try to force him to use another character's limit break.

the issues i believe were more storyline wise, and the one animation in which he bounces around was to be changed completely, things might be different now, but from what i can tell, at the time, easy it was not.

In the post you quoted, I mentioned that if you changed the FIELD animations, it would work in the field, which is therefore during the storyline.

and it's just as easy now to rename a field animation as it was 4 years ago, since all you need to do is copy it outside the folder, rename it, then put it back in.

What I mentioned in my post was doable to FF7 practically as long as it was physically modifiable since we use an hex editor to kill the limit break, and we just rename the field animations.

i mean storyline wise as in changing dialogue and such to fit the new character.

Changing dialogue is entirely optional, and the OP did simply state changing the appearance of Cait Sith to be Sephiroth, not a 100% character role change.

but, for a 100% character role change, changing dialogue is easy enough with loveless and other tools that were out for a number of years.

The way I suggested to do a physical change was easily doable at any point for about 5-6 years.

Although, care to tell me how exactly it ruins the game to have the evil Cait Sith physically be someone else, but retain the original dialogue?

It would take a while for one person to change every single line of dialogue Cait has to be new material as if Sephy said it, and would more than quadrupole the time spent on the mod.

Without changing dialogue, I personally fully replaced Cait Sith with Sephiroth in battle, (giving him 13 different weapons) the field, (all of his field models) the menu icons, the field animations, and I gave him a new introduction text for when he joined the team.

and it took me about 20-25 mins to do that.

the dialogue is just an added touch and would take several hours more than likely to change every instance he says something, and unless its going to be a published mod, I don't see how it creates storyline problems just because he has the same dialogue.

Its an aesthetic change more than anything, like wanting to use Blank in FF9 instead of Zidane.

okay, now i see where i went wrong, the guys i'm talking about weren't replacing him with another existing character with existing animations, they were creating an entirely new character with a completely new backstory, changing alot of how the plot went, new animations in battle and field, etc.

they were calling him Skoll, if my memory serves correctly.

Yes kuroda masahiro that's exactly what I was talking about, replacing Cait Sith by Sephiroth only in an appearance point of view (on field, in battle and in the menu).

You really did it ? And it works ? Is it simple to do ? Can you create a patch for it ?

It took me between 20 and 25 minutes to make the Sephiroth as Cait Sith patch.

I however won't simply give you it, however, I will be willing to teach you how to do it if you're interested.

I'll say what the basic steps are in this thread, but I'll Pm you my msn if you want to have a proper lesson, or learn some other things as well.

Replacing someone with someone else:
For this, we'll completely replace Yuffie with Cloud.

Important to know before you begin:
If you want the limit breaks to work, you CANNOT simply use wallmarket to tell it to load Braver, Cross-Slash... etc.
Thats because the game believes its still Yuffie, and as such, will make the game hang when you select a limit break.

Code: [Select]
instructions:
1: extract battle.lgp to a folder on the computer

2: take all of cloud's files (rtaa - rtda) and put them in a separate folder, such as 'test cloud as yuffie'.

3: rename every 'rt' to 'rx'

4: open LGP tools

5: insert the renamed files into the game

6: open the hex editor, select FF7.exe (REMEMBER TO BACK UP)

7: search for the hex 'FFFF00FF0000FFFF6E006E0013311132FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF0000FFFF'
(Greased lightning)

8: then change every single character for all of Yuffie's limit breaks to Clouds (look in ff7 limit breaks.txt for the hex location and details)

note: using this method, ensure you replace them in the correct order as well, you can't use this method to make Braver into Omnislash, but you can use wallmarket to make Omnislash be the 1-1 limit break if you so wished.

9: play the game with the completely replaced battle model, everything will work perfectly if you did it correctly.

Now, this makes Yuffie into Cloud for the BATTLE side of things, we'll also want the menu icon and field models changed as well.

Nor this, we can take the actual .hrc file and change the internal settings for it to load a different set of animations correctly.

Then we rename the appropriate animations to be Yuffie's instead of Cloud, such as the idle stance, the walk, the run and the other ones that are more important, such as the 'shock' reaction and drawing their weapon before a boss fight.

I won't go openly into which animations are which, but I previously made a complete list of every single animation and who's skeleton it belongs to, with a little description of what it looks like.

Aftyer we changed the battle side and the normal field model, we want to change the other field models to also be Cloud, and for Yuffie, there's 3 models in total; normal (abjb.hrc) Parachute (ahdf.hrc) and Reporter. (feea.hrc)

After we change all the field models to be Cloud, we're almost done.

progress: changed battle side completely, changed limit breaks, changed field models, changed field animations.

left: menu icon.

as you can see, we're just missing the menu icon, which can be found in the menu.lgp.

to change this, we rename cloud's menu icons to be Yuffie's, and put them back in the menu.lgp.

And that completely changes 1 person to be another.

(Used Yuffie as an example because she's easier to edit the initial data of using wallmarket)

If you're still wanting some details, You'll have my msn in your inbox by the time you read this.

Just FYI, you don't really need to use a hex editor for this part, as LiBrE (created by Bosola) can edit them in a great interface. Beats having to use a hex-editor, IMO.

I tried Libre, and I found it to be imperfect for what I needed to do.

Mess around with it for an hour or so and see what the limits of it are.

For my purposes, I simply find it unsatisfactory, but I did include it in my modding kit for those that like it.

I messed with it for hours for my mod's needs, and I had no problem with it. But hey, to each his/her own.

Could you elaborate?
