3ds max 9 model always grey
« on: 2011-12-09 07:35:40 »
hi guys

when importing an .obj model in 3ds max 9, it always shows up grey instead of being colored:

same thing happens with .3ds models. (tried a few)

Tried opening with blender too and the result is the same.

Any help?

thx :)

I'm not really used with 3DS Max but I assume you need to apply texture on it.

As for Blender, you need to do lots of things to texture it, will post that later.

As I post this I will start 3DS Max and see.

ok, thx m9

the .obj comes with a .mtl and a .smd file if it helps more.

Those black polys are flipped - basically, they're inside out. From the look of that picture, I would also heavily doubt the integrity of the vertex welds on the model as well. Max doesn't like .obj (and importing / exporting in general, from my experience), especially in older versions.

First off, convert it to a poly - it's easier that way (right click)

Hit the polygon editor in the modifier list on the right, and highlight all the black polys. once that's done, scroll down to the "Flip" button and hit it. Job done.

NICE LITTLE EXPLANATORY PICTURE.

of course, you'll probably want to weld all the vertices and smooth out those normals, too. I can't see what the model is of, so it's quite hard to gauge.

hi BlitzNCS

thx for the reply and the screen
did all that, flip
now my model is grey and black?

if I cut parts from this model to attach to another, will the color be grey as it is now?
or will it be fully colored as it is supposed to be?

basically, what I wanna do is: take some parts from this model and attach them to another
something like Frankenstein's monster :P

I had no clue what 3dsmax is until 2 days go when I started crash-coursing
looks so fun!  :)

You obviously need to texture, but I don't know how. Anyone?

there are 8 .png image files along with the model:
texture000.png - texture007.png
face, arms, legs, hair etc
these are the textures, right?

is there a way to load everything along with the .obj when you import the .obj into 3ds?

I know how to do it with Blender, but not in 3DS Max. I've searched and experienced, but nothing.

Will write you an in-depth tutorial-y thing when I get the chance - unless anyone else wants to do it before I get round to it.

can you tell how?
thx Vgr

some update here...
got my model to open with textures and everything in Milkshape.
Do you know this one?

file > import > select .obj
then: tools > tile texture mapper and it's gonna do it for you if textures are on the same folder

edit: the texture mapper works on certain models, not every one of them, opened another now and the texture covers all of the model
so it's all showing up as a face, there are eyes everywhere (lol)

I'd really like to get it to work for 3ds though

that would be grand and it's gonna help many I bet ;)
like a reference, where to start what to do

Tell you what - Send me the model file to the email adress on my profile and I'll do you a little video. Best way to explain.

sure thing :)

another update:

in 3ds max

file > import > select the .obj
import options:

then I open the file where the .png image with the .obj is stored and drag + drop it on the model

then I go file > export and pick .3ds as type.

then open the .3ds in PCreator (options > battle model) and "save as" buster.p battle model
can't edit anything in Pcreator though:

anyway, I open the buster.p in kimera 0.95 and it looks like this

didn't edit anything there and just renamed "buster" to rtck, unlgp the battle.lgp, lgp back and my result is:

lol :P

something missing maybe?

Ah, the good ol' Buster Sword...

Done quite a long time ago, but you need to rotate at least. Thanks to what you posted, I'm experiencing with Textures right now.

Edit:

Nothing yet. I managed to make it work, but sometimes it's just... weird. I prefer from far Blender. Far more easy to use.

how did you get it to work on blender?

If I convert the original rtck to 3ds with Biturn it loads fine in blender and milkshape with textures and everything, but loads grey in 3dsmax.
Has to be something in my settings

If I load the one you see as a white big thing in my screenshot, it loads as a grey model too, no textures applied even though it shows ok in 3ds max

still trying to figure it out

well, it's the thing everyone goes for in their first try me thinks :P

With Max, textures are loaded via the shader/material things.

Hit "M" and drag one of the spheres onto the sword. then go down to 'diffuse' and hit the little square next to it. Select Bitmap, and find your texture. Texture loaded.

Hehe, even if 3DS Max is better, I still prefer Blender, as it's more user-friendly.

Here's a step-by-step tutorial on how to apply textures in Blender :

1. In Blender, import the OBJ file.
2. Select to separate as Material, Group and Object (I think it's that, not sure. You have to press the three buttons at the middle.)
3. Left-click on a part to select it. Then you can move it around. Do it for every part.
4. Next, in another window (to the right/bottom of the screen) you change it for "UV/Image Editor"
5. Next, go into "Textued" mode (you have to click on a little dropdown box with some kind of a spehre on it, then select Textured)
6. Go into Edit Mode (click on "Object Mode" and choose Edit Mode)
7. Image > Open Image then select the texture. If it's not the right one you open another. Don't replace, or else every other part that use this texture will also be changed.
8. Once it's done, go back into Object Mode to see! It's done, you have your model textured.

Of course there could be different stuff sometimes. If you need more precise help, you can add me to MSN ([email protected]) and I'll gladly help you.

Yeah, if I drag one of them (there's nothing on them) it just applies a grey on it
but if I go down to "diffuse" > bitmap > bitmap is applied on the sphere, then drag + drop it on the sword model then I see it

thx m9 :)

@Vgr : thx I'm checking it out :)

you might want to check the 'show texture in viewport' option in the material browser.

that's a matter of opinion and depends on what you're used to....
