"Samsung's 'troll' ad... 'It doesn't take a genius'.

It looks like Samsung has responded to the iPhone 5 with a new 'inflammatory' ad that will run in newspapers starting this Sunday.
"It doesn't take a genius" is the title of the new ad that Samsung plans to run in US national newspapers starting this Sunday, in which they compare the just announced iPhone 5 to the Galaxy S III.

The ad breaks down some key specs of the two phones, but it's also a bit misleading...

On the Apple side of the equation you'll find such items as "a totally different plug," while the Samsung portion is padded out with pretty much every software feature the Korean company's been able to give a name to.

The cherry atop this cake of provocation is the slogan "it doesn't take a genius," which simultaneously pokes fun at Apple's Genius store employees and implies that choosing the Galaxy S III over the iPhone 5 is a no-brainer.

Take a look at it:"

Samsung is running a similar campaign on Twitter too:

If Apple hadn't sued Samsung and tried to ban all of their products from Apple's biggest markets, I wonder if Samsung would be trolling so hard.
Being totally non-biased though, the new iPhone 5 really wasn't' that impressive. It's hardware doesn't stack up to the competition like the iPhone 4s did. When Apple's marketing team says that they are being revolutionary, it makes me giggle inside at the dummies who take what Tim Cook says seriously. Well... definitely more than when Samsung trolls Apple. If I had an upgrade on my plan i'd totally go for the galaxy s III or the note.

Well, Samsung DOES have a point, and in the end they produce most of the chips in the iPhone, so they know exactly what's inside the competition's devices.

But honestly the Super AMOLED screens alone are a reason to own one of those, if you have the money to go for this price range of phones that is, they really blow all other screens out of the water.

Apple trolled pretty hard with their 'I'm a Mac' campaign. It was only a matter of time before somebody trolled them back.
I've found that most people who bought the iPhone 5 have no idea what the specs are because it's been downplayed by the popular media such as The Today Show.

When Apple switched from the slow dual ARM PortalPlayer CPUs to Samsung ICs they said it was to counter fake chinese devices

What about the software? If the OS sucks the hardware doesn't matter.

It's Android. ICS. Not much more to say that hasn't already been said of Ice Cream Sandwich elsewhere. It plays Sonic CD, which is really all that matters.

But I'll say more anyway when mine arrives later this week. Reviews tend to ignore the software side, so who knows, maybe I'll have something to say that cnet missed :P

iOS is actually pretty rock solid.  Don't take me for a blind apple fanboy though, just a regular apple fanboy.  The only thing I don't like about Android is the UI.  Haven't found a launcher for it I like yet, and I don't like some of the base-elements of the UI.

That being said, I'd like an iPhone 5, but it's not enough of an upgrade to make me drop my 4S just yet.

its surely more stable then android, but android has the advantage of being open source, with android, YOU are in control of your phone. you can do with it whatever you want as long as the hardware can handle it.. u can't say the same for iOS, you don't rly own it, you're stuck with the product they sell you-
a good thing about iOS, is that applications which are available for both android and iOS, usually run better/more smooth on the iOS, but i guess that's to be expected considering there's 1 iphone model per generation and a billion android ones

That being said, I'd like an iPhone 5, but it's not enough of an upgrade to make me drop my 4S just yet.

Well if you much prefer the ios look and layout and want an exact replica for it on android best launcher for that 'espier launcher' or 'miui' you should check it out it's awesome :P

iOS started from a beta of OS X 10.5 which is a rewrite of Nextstep 4.0 coupled to FreeBSD code and to a lot of Apple code(some bits are older than OS X).
Its evolution is very interesting, e.g they first made it look like MacOS 8.x and released 2 early builds for x86(!) and PPC and GUI libraries for Windows (OmniWeb browser used them) then  at a bigger rewrite discontinued x86 but released crippled ISOs without GUI of many builds called Darwin for free.

The actual XNU kernel of iOS 6.0 seems to have a build revision newer than OS X 10.8.
Some parts are open source but its difficult to use them for own OS design purposes.

To be fair, most vendors try to do this with Android, and lock the bootloader, causing custom ROM installation to be a pain in the ass.  Just as you have to jailbreak iOS to truly own it, you have to root and unlock the bootloader to truly own most (but not all) android devices; so I find that argument to be a bit moot.

Interestingly Apple does use NetBSD on their Airport Extreme and lock it.
Even the older iPods modified PixoOS is encrypted.

In case of a router like the Airport Extreme, if the built-in firmware was a pile of crap, I'd be pissed, but the Airport Extreme is the single best router I have ever used.  Never had a compatibility issue with it, the utility used to configure it is 1000x better than any web form I've ever used, and it has damn good throughput over wifi (I've hit 40 Mbit/s over wifi with mine, not even 5 Ghz wireless, just regular ol' 2.4 Ghz).

As far as the modified PixoOS on the iPod Classic.  It works as advertised, damn near flawlessly.  I've played around with iPod Linux, and Rockbox, and while they're both great replacement firmwares (or at least iPodLinux -WAS- until the project fell apart [for those in the know about it, I'm still waiting for hotdog goddamnit]), they're just not practical on an iPod (although Rockbox may have gotten better, haven't used it in a while, and I don't have a decent screen for the iPod Classic I built, so I don't really wanna mess with it just yet.

tl;dr Airport Extreme and PixoOS are encrypted and locked, but on those devices, it's probably one of the few cases where it's for the better.
