Best Games, Any Platform
« on: 2013-02-23 18:24:19 »
I am on a mission to play all the good/influential/nostalgic games across every platform. I'm a bit of a collector and I have basically every noteworthy console (not pieces of shit like the Sega CDI) and I want everyone to post their favorite games here and include the platform. It can be as old as Donkey Kong or as new as Halo 4, as obscure as Milon's castle or as famous as Chrono Trigger. I only ask that you contain all your suggested titles to one post and if u wish to add another then edit your original post.

PLEASE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO POST HERE

PC:

Dungeon Keeper 2
Dues Ex 1 and Human Revolution (Invisible War can be skipped, it's bad)
The entire Hitman series.
Just Cause 2(There's a multiplayer mod for it now that can hold about 2000 people and is still in development)
Thief series
Max Payne series

Consoles: (Actual platform may vary, most are multi-platform games anyway and some are also on PC)

Devil May Cry series(First 3 are in an HD collection, and DmC can be skipped since it's not as good and is just a retelling/reboot)
Halo series(While GoldenEye paved the way for shooter on consoles, Halo 2 revolutionised it with the way they did multipler with the matchmaking and parties that are now pretty much standards in most game)
Uncharted series(Like Tomb Raider only much much better)
Red Dead Redemption(GTA on horseback but with plenty to do outside of the story)
Gran Turismo series(2 and 5 being the notable ones)
Front Mission series(including the third person one from a couple of years ago)
Assassins Creed series
Splinter Cell series
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine
Darksiders 1 and 2(Play as two of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War in 1, Death in 2)
The Lego*insertfranchisehere* games, great fun with a friend sat next to you)
Resident Evil series(Yes, all of them, well except Gaiden which was a GameBoy Colour game and was pretty bad)
Dino Crisis 1 and 2(Avoid 3, they lost the plot and set it in space)
GoldenEye
Perfect Dark
Blast Corps
Mario series
Hybrid Heaven(terrible level design but the combat system is semi-turn based and has you learning new moves from opponents)
FIFA 98 (The only football/soccer game you'll ever need since it's pretty much the last one to even include a indoor pitch)

Persona 4
Dragon Quest VIII
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Okami HD
Grand Theft Auto IV

PC
Dragon Age Origins & Awakening

I'm gonna stick to games that either haven't been mentioned yet, or I feel are really, really, really worth mentioning again, so if you don't see a given game on here, it doesn't necessarily mean I don't like it.

Top Tier:
  • The Walking Dead (multiplatform, but PC version is probably best)
  • The entire Metal Gear franchise (even 4, probably the weakest entry, is still pretty fun)... but avoid Snake's Revenge. It stinks and it's not canon.
  • The entire Fire Emblem franchise
  • Natural Selection 2, if you like shooters or RTS. Certainly better than CoD.
  • Super Metroid
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy is the best form of all three games. Really only the first two are "top tier", but the third is decent also.
  • Sonic 3&Knuckles, but it might take some research to find a rerelease that didn't mess this up. I recommend Sonic Mega Collection or Virtual Console.
  • Both Portal games, preferably on PC.
  • Final Fantasy IV, preferably the PSP port. Story itself is pretty generic, but it's got the most meaningful character development in the franchise, IMO.
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, except for an irritating fetch quest near the end. Most of the game is a solid 10/10, and my personal favorite in the series.

Great Tier:
  • Sonic Generations. PC version if you have an XInput gamepad, 360 otherwise. PS3 version has input lag problems. Most of the fun in this game is time-trialing the levels over and over again aiming for perfection.
  • Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed is my kart racer of choice. It's hard as hell, but legitimately so; there is absolutely no rubber-banding AI, no game-ruining blue shells to wreck your race at the last second, and it has decent online.
  • Super Smash Bros Brawl, with mods. Swapping in custom songs is surprisingly addicting, and mods such as Project M and Brawl- go a long way to balancing an otherwise quite unbalanced game.
  • Advance Wars series (GBA, DS). A lot like Fire Emblem but with building your own units for money and a less good story.
  • Left 4 Dead 2, which really isn't as good as the first one but it has a much bigger community (and therefore is easier to find online games).
  • You Don't Know Jack has come in a lot of flavors over the years. I recommend the Facebook game, if only because it's still getting new questions and the pop culture jokes are not outdated.
  • Metroid Zero Mission isn't as good as Super Metroid or the Prime games, but it's still worth playing. It's not terrible like Fusion.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask manages to improve on OoT in almost every meaningful way, with a far better story, better characters, cleverer dungeons, better sidequests... Only real shortcoming is that it has fewer dungeons, but it's still an absolutely amazing game.

And another shout out to The Walking Dead. It's honestly more of an interactive movie than a game, but it's so good completely and utterly 100% absolutely amazing at it that I will let that slide. Seriously, the best written characters I've ever seen in anything, let alone a video game.

Honorable mention goes to Metroid: Other M, which would qualify as great tier for the gameplay, but is yanked away by the one of the worst stories I've seen in a long time, one with severe continuity problems, one that takes a dump all over established canon, one that actively un-develops characters... If a mod is released that changes the story (or at least skips the cutscenes), I'll rank it great, but otherwise only play it if you can turn your brain off during the story bits.

I've been gaming on PC for the majority of my life. It started for me back on a C64 that is still in my old closet of my parents' house. I considered listing some C64 games, but no one would find them entertaining by today's standards. :(

As for PC games that haven't been listed yet:

Commander Keen series
Descent series
Descent: Freespace series (different from above)
Shattered Steel (it's like MechWarrior, but less complicated)
Starcraft
SW:KOTOR (mostly the first one, but the second one has a few fan-made mods that make it better*)
Ultima series

I've learned that PC ports of games are almost never as good as the original. There are a few exceptions, more so if you're playing with a controller.

* Interesting story I have about KOTOR2: I bought it at a Mexican black market (actually in Mexico) and only got the first three discs. I finally got a hold of the final disc from a friend and I played it a lot after that. There was one weird scene that was....incorrectly triggered (?) where I was running through a bar and without prompting, a character who was not in my party started a conversation with my character from inside the ship you travel around in. That would have been odd enough, but half-way through the forced dialog this character that started the conversation was suddenly attacked by three enemies (still inside our ship, mind you) and DIED mid-sentence. The rest of the conversation continued as if she were still alive.
Anyway, this is the kind of thing the mentioned fan mods fix).

Reminds me... forgot to list some classics.

Atari 2600

Q-Bert
Pong
Space Invaders
Centipede
Missile Command

And they are still good.  Surprisingly I don't need a 2 hour cutscene.  :P

and

Super Hang-on
Not to mention Lotus II Turbo Challenge, James Pond... for Megadrive  There are so many.

It seriously is on a Final Fantasy level to me! It is a bit like FF12 but I have a way more FF6 feeling with this game! :) I DO recommend all of you to start investing 100+ hours of your lives into this game! :P

You were posting at the same time I was reading... I was going to reply that I felt awkward as soon as I begun slashing bunnies and I was repelled by the fake star wars and Evangelion feel of it  but the retexture project will definitely make me give it a second chance... I loved The last story though. Please provide mewith any texture packs you find online for N64 and wii emulators.
