The Game Crashed
« on: 2013-07-23 13:07:50 »
Hi.

I was playing FF7 modded. I was in Shinra Headquarters going up from floor 63 to floor 64 when the game suddenly crashed. (While making the transition between the levels.)
The game only crashed once during my entire playthrough when I was playing the game unmodded, and that crash happened when I was leaving Mythril Mines. I believe that's a bug or something with the game, so it was to be "expected".

It told me that it had saved a crash.dmp file and asked if I wanted to make an emergency save file. (I said yes.)
I would included the crash.dmp file here, but I have no idea where the software saved it on my computer. (Same with the emergency save file.)

So what does the emergency save file do? Can I load my game from where it is?

I am also uncertain if I have the latest version of all the mods I'm using. -Can you check this from my crash.dmp file?

EDIT: I used a search in Windows, thinking I wouldn't find anything (windows search never does.) I was really surprised when I found a Crash.dmp file located in C:\Users\Peter\Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII -I'm guessing this is the file? Only problem is it's 81mb large, could this be right? Seems waaay to big for me.

EDIT #2: I uploaded the crash.dmp file just in case. It can be found here:

Rename the crash save to save00.ff7. (If you don't want to overwrite your current save, rename it to save01.ff7 which will replace slot 2) All of these can be found in the save folder.

Which is the crash save?

This is what I have in my save folder:

achievement.dat
avatar.png
metadata.xml
save00.ff7

I am assuming that the last file is my game's save file. (Not the emergency crash save file.)
If I start up the game and go to Continue it tries to load my last save file (long before the game crashed.) -I am guessing that this is from the file that I mentioned above.

How would an emergency save file work anyway? I can only save and load at/from save points in the game?

EDIT: Oh, nevermind. I found it in another folder. I realized that I was looking in the PC-version's save folder, so I started browsing the folder in which the game was installed and found a new folder called "save" which contained the crash file.
I will rename it and try it out, see if it works. I will be back with more annoying questions if it crashes again.

Just a small update on what happened:
I successfully loaded the emergency save file. -It was really cool how that worked. =)
I played on and it didn't crash, so I got hooked and didn't stop until I had left Midgar.
All is well, for now!

EDIT: This thread can be marked as solved now, btw. (I don't know how.)

It was probably just a random un-replicable crash, that happens sometimes.

thats intresting that they never changed the path for the emergency save. it must be indenpendent of the savePath setting but why?
