Profanity Free English Translations

Hi, kinda new here but an oldschool gamer from WAY back. I have done some searching but had no luck finding if there was a "G" rated version in any of the text mods. I want my kids to be able to enjoy the best game ever created, but would rather not have them walking around the house repeating any Cid or Barret quotes.

If there isn't any available what would be the best text editor to use to so I can do it myself?

I try to get Loveless but the links were dead.

Makou Reactor by Myst6re is what you're looking for.

I don't remember there being a profanity free mod, but the only profanity that exists in FF7 (other than the $%&# words) are few and far between, so it shouldn't take too long to edit it all.

You can mod the game yourself... but the translation is the translation (our retranslation has pretty much done what the designers wanted).  And you should not shield kids from benign swear words.  Esp not in a game.  I never went around quoting cid or barrett.

When opening a flevel.lgp with Makou Reactor (move the flevel.lgp to the desktop first to avoid writing permission errors), you'd hit Ctrl+T (or select Text Editor from tools) to open the texts used by the game, and then edit them as you see fit. No need to close it going between fields either, just click the next one with the text editor open. One important thing to watch for is text windows; if you replace the profanities with something that has the same number of letters (or maybe using the #@&% if there's no appropriate word) then you can avoid having to go into the scenes themselves to resize the windows for each edited piece of text (which can be hard to find sometimes).

You'll want to have a decent knowledge of the game's story events to speed this up. Remembering where Barret and Cid can appear would speed this up over going through every single field manually. I can't remember if other characters swear, but Heidegger's got one during the scene that plays on Floor 70 of Shinra Tower (the one that plays right after the party falls into the sewers).

I agree with this. The only curse words in FF7 are mostly damn and hell, which The Simpsons (a primetime show) uses almost every episode. I'm not even sure whether "ass" even appears in the game.

Yeah I knew there wasn't much but I though Barret had one in particular when he thought Marlene was killed, has been awhile since I played through so I could be mistaken.

Also I was playing the original PS1 version and now will be playing the Steam download, not sure of any differences between the two.

Thing is, even if you censor out the language, the game is still not G-rated. It still has lots of violence

Your kids will learn these words anyway. Instead of forbidding them (you only give these words power - the flavor of the forbidden fruit you know) you should talk with them about these words. Swearing is a natural behavior you can't forbid, but you can give it a direction, which isn't that obscene and vulgar.
Allow me this metaphor:
You can't prevent that the water will flow from the mountain into the sea, but you can define the way the water should take.

Of course, but its cartoons. The old Bugs bunny cartoons where pretty violent too. They know the violence is not real, but the words are. And thanks for your concerns, I am not over protecting them. There is enough vulgarity in this world without them having it at home as well. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I don't really think the "s" word is necessarily appropriate for an 8 year old. Chances are he wont understand half of what's going on anyway, but he can read.

I am 37 and don't use such language. Not trying to get in a debate about parenting, but thanks for the advice nonetheless.

Swear words would be the least of my concerns, considering an innocent girl is stabbed to death by a megalomaniac.   

Anyway, use touphscript to edit swear words.  You can also download DLPB Tools 2.0 and use TextMod with the text files.  Or another mass text editor.  Then reencode.  Or use Makou Reactor and find/replace.
