text messed up--jumbled together
« on: 2014-08-07 20:17:28 »
I got FFVII running on my other computer using bootleg mods with no problem. however when i put it onto my laptop, I'm getting jumbled (i guess that's how i would describe it) text. It's like all the letters from each line of text are on top of eachother, so it looks like one f***ed up letter. This is ALL text, newgame/load menu, main menu, speech, etc.

anyone ever got this, know how to fix it?

i had originally just copied everything from my desktop to laptop. then i got rid of that, redownloaded EVERYTHING (mods, bootleg, etc) and reinstalled it all, still getting the same problem.

any help would be lovely

Your window.bin file was not properly updated. I bet that you're using the Steam version, right? I have a good idea on what this could be, but I'll need to know the version you have, the location it's installed in, the location Bootleg is in, the location of the mods and your LastUsed.bp file, found in the Bootleg folder. It's a text file, just open with notepad and copy its contents here.

yes, steam version. i have steam installed in its own folder on my desktop. the mod folder (the one downloaded from torrent) is in another folder on desktop--bootleg is in same folder as mods.

Don't install on the desktop, in the Program Files or My Documents.

No, it should not be in either of the places I mentioned. I recommend C:\Games. Then yes, re-run Bootleg.

You should choose to download FF7 in a new library, on C:\SteamLibrary for example.

The guide says to place BFE and the downloaded mods into a non-system folder, e.g. C:\Games\FF7. Desktop is considered a system folder.

The GC in STEP 1 will identify the location of your game folder and copy it to a non-system folder if it needs to, so moving it yourself shouldn't be done.

If you're going to start all over, which I suggest you do, then you need to read the beginning of the FAQ section on the steps to starting over fresh.

Fix those mistakes and it will install fine for you.

Systems folders are anything created during the OS installation. Non-system folders are folders the user creates on their own. What works on one computer doesn't prove that it works on every other computer. In fact, there will always be mixed results in the system folders because of the different Windows versions, different Windows updates, and different Windows settings everyone has that affects those folders. So to avoid any conflict with those settings, the system folders need to be avoided.

Eh. I'd be dubious about describing Desktop as a system folder. Normally a system folder means a folder where the permissions are generally locked down to prevent average users from (easily) changing things - so, definitely the Windows folder, and on more recent versions of Windows, Program Files.

It's perfectly understandable that if you install things into a system folder like somewhere within Program Files, mod installers and the like will have problems, because the default permissions probably won't let them change things, so you'd want to avoid that.

Desktop is a folder which absolutely should be freely accessible and writeable. While it's certainly possible a mod installer might have trouble if it's installed on the desktop, frankly that's a sign the installer is doing something wrong and it might also break with a folder the user had created manually anywhere else, too.

In the context of Bootleg, it's not dubious. PitBrat created the installer and scripting mainly through batch files and knows that the Bootleg installer can, and will,  cause issues for some users that install into the Users folder. I don't disregard what you're saying though. I just speak from personal experience, what I've been told, and what I've witnessed when using the Bootleg installer specifically.

Oh, I don't doubt that some installers might have problems being installed onto the Desktop - although I still hold it's an indication the installer is doing something wrong.

I just wouldn't call it a system folder, because an entirely reasonable person might see the advice "don't install into a system folder" and assume "Aha, I'll avoid Program Files and install it into Documents/Desktop instead - that's one of my folders, not a system folder". Particular since [recent versions, at least, of] Windows let you put those folders anywhere you want.

Oh great, Windows 8+ has made my flawed terminology even more flawed. Woohoo! :-P

Well Kompass63' Game Converter for STEP 1 is supposed to avoid all these conversations anyways. It'll identify if the game is in the Program Files, Users, or Documents folders and move them to C:\Games\FF7. If that doesn't happen, then the GC wasn't used correctly :|

Well that's news to me. I always assumed the Users folder had something going on, since the Bootleg could fail on there. I don't personally think that installer(s) is/are at fault, but if you say so it must be the case. You're a tad more knowledgeable than me so not going to argue. I did witness installs going weird on the desktop but going fine in non-default-created folders.
