I've got a problem with Nvidia patch
« on: 2002-10-19 15:13:54 »
*My english is not perfect cuz I'm not from english speaking country so    just understand it please  :)

I've been reading through the posts at this forum but I haven't found proper solution.
I've got windows XP and ATi Radeon.  A few days ago, I installed Nvidia patch and the game graphics got far better.  But the problem is, when I enter the world map or get out of world map(like getting into town, menu, or battle), there's loads of hard disk swapping.  It takes really long so I can't get on with the game.

I think it's not because of free hard drive space cuz I've got more than 20GB left. Does anyone know good solution for that? I really need your help.  As a reference, I've installed XP chocobo race 1.02 patch, too.

It could be one of three things:

You need to enable "sync data transfer" between your hard drive and your CD-Rom. To do this, open up control panel, go to the system applet, then enter the options for your CD drive and select "Sync data transfer".

Another problem is it could be your hard drive has gone nuts with the swap file. To remedy this, select to NOT have windows manage memory settings, and create a swap file that is a min of 128 and a max of 128. This prevents it from constantly resizing.

Third, try defragmenting your hard drive.

I've tried what you said but I'm afraid there's nothing changed.
And when it comes to CD sync data transfer, I can't find that option in my control panel.

anyone can help me?

Are you able to find your way to the "Device Manager"?

Another way to get to it (if your using Win9x at least, under NT/2k/XP the names may be different), is to right-click the "My computer" Icon and click "properties", and the dialog box that pops up should have "Device Manager" as the second tab from the left.  Click on that.

Then, click on the plus symbol next to the CD-ROM drives entry.  Double-click on your CD drive from the list, and you should get to the dialog box that allows you to set those options.

Yes. I've already found my CD rom drive properties, but I haven't got any option about 'sync data transfer'.  I use windows XP.

When I play FF7 in software renderer mode, there's no hard disk swapping at all.  And when I play it in Nvidia Direct3D mode, every graphics looks great but I always get loads of swapping.

I really need help.:)

Hmm....I wonder if XP got more intellegent about that option.

Usually, that option is reccommended to be used only on SCSI interfaces for drives.  Most hard drives are ATA, IDE, or E-IDE, so maybe XP noticed that and decided to not give you that option, since its not recommended to use it on non-SCSI equipment (at least, according to Micro$oft)

Ah, yes I had this exact same issue with my GeForce3 and it seemed to mysteriously disppaear when I put in my Radeon 9700.

First, check your video drivers; updating them may just resolve the issue.

Try unclicking the box for Nvidia in the config screen.

When I had this issue, I was running FF7 in XP under Win98 compatibility mode. What I'd recommend doing is right clicking your shortcut to start FF7, and go to Properties. Click on the "Compatibility" tab. Make sure that the checkbox for "Run this program in compatibility..."  is _not_ checked.

If you still get slow response, check to make sure all your drives (hard drives and CD-ROM drives) are using some sort of DMA mode. To check it, right click My Computer, go to Properties, click on Device Manager under the Hardware tab, click the "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then double-click Primary IDE channel. Check under the "Advanced Settings" tab. If you see PIO mode, you will get slow performance. Check under Secondary IDE channel as well and look for the same thing. To correct this, contact your hard drive or CD-ROM drive's manufacturer for help on enabling DMA mode.

Lastly, make sure your motherboard's latest drivers are installed. This make cause some graphic loading issues if your AGP drivers are not properly installed.

As a final resort, you might just have to play the game in software rendering mode.
