Okay, so it's not possible to revive Aeris after she dies. However I did hear that in the Japanese version, it's possible to bring her back later in the game.

Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, how and when this occurs in the storyline?

False. Not only for the released Jap version, but it has never at any point during development been intended for Aeris to return.

Proof:
(1) - Fact: Having Aeris in your party after her death has a high probability of crashing the game, because there are no scripts/behaviours for her presence in the final release of FF7.
(2) - Fact: You could easily prevent Aeris from ever rejoining the party again by removing the single line of source code Party.AddCharacter(AERIS);.
(3) - Fact: Programmers are inherently lazy.
(4) - Premise: Let's assume that at some point during the development of FF7 you could bring Aeris back, and coding and scripting was performed to accomodate her presence in the party.
| (5) - If (1) and (4), then all scripting for Aeris has been painstakingly removed from FF7 since then.
| (6) - Contradiction: (2), (3), (5).
(7) - Thus premise (4) is false; there has never been a way to return Aeris.

This also works to disprove any Aeris revival in the Japanese release, since the US release is based on FF7jap and we know (1) to be true for FF7us. And FF7 International is basically FF7us but in Japanese (using most of FF7jap's scripts but some of the new code from FF7us, like the Underwater materia), so the same applies for it.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. I seem to remember reading it on a Final Fantasy forum, some guy saying something about how in the Japanese version, it was part of the storyline that you could get her back and "why did they cut that from the American version". Obviously mistaken ;)

I remember once hearing that they wanted to add getting Aeris back to the US version, but ran out of time, so they didn't.

Ya gotta hate rumors like that...

Remember, FF7 was rushed towards the end, because they had all those scary otaku storm Square headquarters.
In the Japanese version there are more things to allude to the possibility, and those were easily removed from the US version. (item or two, room or two).
Square wanted the US version to look more tidy. Honestly, not going against all of Qhimm's comments, I don't think they would have had the time to -get- to scripting a revival for Aeris. The idea must have been on the storyboard and some parts of the game may have been prepared (parts of maybe a field, or something), but they didn't get to it, then tidied up the US version. They tidied the PC version even more (translation mistakes...)
What ticks me off is they can fix some translation mistakes for the PC version but they couldn't spend a smaller amount of time to porting it better. Bleh.

Mr Sakaguchi's Mother died while FF7 was being written.

He wanted to express that loss though his characters. That's why he killed Aerith off in such a senseless way and that's why she's not coming back. Her death represented the death of his mom, simple as that. Mr Sakaguchi is very family orintated, that's why Aki Ross shares the same birthday as his daughter. I've read interviews where he has expressed this over and over again.

To revive Aeirth, just so you can get some white mage out of it, profanes what her death stood for. It's a loss and we all feel it. I feel sorry for Sakaguchi the most ;_; Aeith was just a character. You can't replace a mother.

[edit]

Just to put my money where my mouth is, here is a bit from an interview..

Q: Are there any new themes in FF VII?

Sakaguchi: When we were creating Final Fantasy VI, my mother passed away. And ever since then I've been thinking about the theme, Life. Life exists in many things. And I was curious about what would happen if I attempted to analyze life in a mathematical and logical way.

Keep in mind not ALL scripting was removed. Someone poted out some pretty fishy stuff playing though FFVII Pc with Aeris in your party. Like around.. Iceicle Inn it was...

Uhm, halkun... is that a typo on your behalf or did you misread?

Well if it's as you say, then Sakaguchi-san had the idea in his mind ever since FF6 was created. And her death has a deeper meaning, one that was planned from the beginning. Too bad his message didn't exactly trigger people to look upon themselves and ponder the meanings of Life, but to rather frantically start spreading rumors about reviving Aeris.

If you mean Aeris having words to say at Icicle Inn and after snowboarding, that's easily explained.  It is entirely possible that at the scripting of those particular scenes, they didn't know exactly *WHEN* Aeris was going to die.

If you want evidence of this kinda behaivour, just look at the start of Mythril Mines, where you see the dead Midgar Zolom.  Yuffie has a line, even though it's impossible to get her before the mines.

Remember: programmers are lazy and it's easier to dummy stuff out rather than delete stuff.  We'd see far more dummied scripts and suspicious stuff *elsewhere* in the game if something on this magnitude was originally planned and started to be scripted.

(For the record, the biggest dummied out thing that anyone's found are the letters to wife and child found in the Key Items list)

It IS POSSIBLE to get Yuffie before the mines. I DID IT! I didn't use Qhimm's haxing prgrams either.

There is a forest outside near Midgar and the place you go afterwards. I was there, and Yuffie appeared.

If I remember correctly, the line Aeris says outside of Icicle (at least, the line she said in the picture) is actually what Vincent would say if you had him in your party at that time.

I'd have to guess the game didn't know how to handle Aeris being in this scene (because she was never meant to be) and somehow managed to stick Vincent's line in there.

I always thought the Debug Room as a whole held that title.

Oh *really*.  Perhaps you'd like to explain where this forest is, because I simply cannot find it.

Nay, Aeris does indeed have her own quote for the snowfields, unique from everyone else's.[/quote]

Re: forest - I thought that too  :o

I hate to be a complete newbie to all this but I haven't heard of the Debug Room, letters in the Key Items, the line Aeris says etc. Can you provide any more info on these? eg What's in the debug room, what Aeris was meant to say, that sort of thing.

To get to the debug room for the PC, use Qhimm's game save editor.

On PSX, I think you have to use a game shark.

I know that there are a couple of forests around the world where Yuffie appears, but I've never heard of one near Midgar, no... And definitely not in time to see the Midgar Zolom. Earliest one I know of is right after Fort Condor, before Junon.

Haven't played FF7 in a while, but I don't remember any forest before the Midgar Zolom. Besides, how would a forest manage to grow anywhere near Midgar?

Nayoung: Fort Condor's after the cave bit, so it's possible to get Yuffie by then.

And what's all this about letters to a wife and child? Never heard of it before, is it available during the game or only through the debug room?

I found this while searching for more info on it, so I uploaded it to my server:

Also found this site offering the Debug Room save game for the PC version:

Heh, so you found Skye Render's site. Cool, so the circle is complete. Anyway, IIRC he used the Jenova editor to warp to the Debug Room :)

You can't get those letters normally, but you can even READ the dialog through Cosmo. Search in the Gongaga files. Some guy is giving you a letter to his wife in Kalm. Too bad he isn't in the real game.
