I'm assuming that you're using a USB controller, and that you're using Windows XP.  If not, please give us more details on your system configuration.

Some people have successfully gotten USB controllers to work with FF7 in Windows XP.  Go to the Game Controllers control panel, hit the "Advanced" button, and make sure the preferred device is set to the device that you want to use with FF7.

Maybe someone else knows more.

I had this issue before in xp, it is one of three things:

1) usb controlller is not being detected
Try unplugging and replugging the gamepad. Listen for the "good connection" sound. If you get that sound, the gamepad should work. Try testing the controller in Start->Control Panel->Game Controllers to make sure it works. Try other games as well. Also, be sure the plug in your usb controller before you start FF7 or any game. To be sure no other usb controllers are confilcting, make sure you're using only one usb gamepad or joystick.

2) controls not configured properly
Go to Config in FF7 and remap your controller's buttons to the game options. Switching to different controllers may leave the old mapping in place.

3) win98/95 compatiblity mode
win98 and win95 compatibility mode disables usb controllers from interfacing with most games. Make sure FF7 has no compatiblity mode active before starting the game.

The best solution is often to use the Riva/TNT patched FF7Config.exe but use the original FF7.exe.  Are you doing this?

The TNT patch is at Eidos.

On the very, very, very bottom....

OH yeah....it's....it's probably on your install disk, too. Hidden in one of the directories

I have basicly the same setup. Gameport sidewinder and a USB gamepad. To get it to work, I had to completely take the sidewinder out of the system. Unplugging it, and removing it from the game controlers control panel.

You can try that.

Hello. You're new, so please read the rules. Specifically, you've revived a two year old dead topic. One for the top 10 of resurrections, perhaps.

Moving on to your question, you can find ff7input.cfg in your main Final Fantasy VII directory where you installed the game.

You don't have one? Have you ever changed the Config to adjust the keyboard at all or are you just stuck with the default? Try changing the key config in the game and exiting, see if it creates one for you then to accomodate your custom keys.
