Can't see backgrounds in FF7..
« on: 2003-08-07 17:20:49 »
I'm sick and tired of getting a horribly laggy gameplay, so I tried that XP Patch... didn't work... well, it did, I mean, combat is GREAT, but...

Colors are messed
I have no backgrounds

Does anyone have a Radeon card here and know how to run it in D3D?

Has anyone thought of writing opengl for this game? Everybody loves openGL, it would probably fix all the problems... though it would take a while to implement it, and I assume the patch would be rather large...

There IS opengl for the game, but it is 50% dysfunctional. They never finished it off, and it looks rather poor.

Also, have you tried messing around with the settings of your video card? Well? Hop to it!!

Also, I'm assuming that you are using the 1.02 patched executible. It may help if you use the config program from 1.02, and use the original ff7.exe that came with the game. That may help.

In order to use D3D with FF7 on a Radeon you'll need to use the 1.02 config. Check the NVIDIA checkbox and select TNT instead of RIVA128.

Also make sure Anti Aliasing and Anisotrophy are turned off in D3D, as they are very likely to screw up the game's background graphics.

I don't think the version of your Radeon driver would really matter though, as it works for Catalyst 3.5 and 3.6.

Also are you running it on the Radeon 9xxx series or?

I think this might be due to the fact that I've gone into my video card and tweaked it for performance.

Everything is set to the LOWEST possable in the opengl/d3d control panels, but I

HAVE AN ACTUAL NVIDIA RIVA TNT! Lol... Its 4 years old I think, but it still works.... That doesn't mean I'll uninstall my Radeon.

The model is a radeon 8500LE(128 meg). I'm running the catalyst 3.6... on the 3.5 I couldn't seem to fix the winxp drag/scroll lag, so I had to mess with drivers until the 3.6 came out.

...Strange, I noticed in the config that my test for 8-bit-paleted-textures

comes out as "---"

Graphics cards are so random when it comes to FFVII. There is no real answer that we can give you because everyone seems to have their own unique problems. I have a Radeon card and all the game runs perfectly without any messing with the cards settings... you on the otherhand are experienceing problems. I think what you need to do really is fiddle around with the graphics card settings until you find the configuration that works for you. (And make sure you do what FFTactic_Boy says and check the NVIDIA box selecting TNT in the 1.02 config program.)

Tried that...

No luck... is FF8(friend is offering me it for 15$) this bad?

(Eidos did such a horrible port on this... I'm suprised they are still in business... if they even are)

If you look at the back of the FFVII-PC case, it has an ad for Daikatana. That was not a good time for Eidos to begin with. And I think Eidos was just the distributor anyhow. But, the port is like 5 years old. A lot of things have changed with video cards and operating systems. And FFVII-PC is not that successful in terms of sales.

I, in fact, have a Mobility Radeon 7500 (laptop) with XP, and it works like a charm. You might want to try to restore video card settings to their defaults and use software rendering.

And FFVIII is worth $15, but it's not that great. Worth a play through, though. But don't buy it from your friend, because it costs $10-15 off-the-shelf as a Greatest Hits game.

Take the $15 deal if it's FF8PC. That one's a keeper. But if it's the playstation version, pull down your trousers and give your friend some golden showers. Either steal it right from him, or take floyd's advice and buy it cheaply. By the way, FF8PC is fairly decent. It has better support for newer video cards.

Faeranicus: Try as many video card drivers you possibly can, and also mess with the settings.

No, it won't give you ANYWHERE near the amount of problems FF7 does.  FSAA even works with it, as well....either that, or no one's really complained on here about it. :P

Just make sure you're using the GeForce patch if you're using a GeForce-based card.
