ff8 game crash
« on: 2003-08-21 18:19:21 »
Hey all,
I've seen bits and pieces about talk of the PC version of ff8 crashing, but no real solutions... I'm running WinXP with a Geforce card (installed the patch, though I'd gotten used to the injustice of software 3D well before I even found that), and to get to the point, the game crashes for me right at the beginning of Disc 4 before any FMVs or anything.  (Talk about a super-annoying place - it could be worse, like after last boss fight, I suppose).  Anyway, I don't know if it's a problem with the game or the disc (trying to download a copy of disc 4 now to see if that works better) - but if anyone could help a poor player out, I'd be very grateful...

Its odd for a game to crash because of a CD if its not at an FMV.  Did you do a full install?  (If you did, your FF8 folder should be around 600 megs).

You could send someone your save file and have them play to the next save point.

it *might* be at an FMV - I wouldn't know because I neveer got that far... However, I did try checking the integrity of the next FMV (which I'd assume would be right about there) by running it through ff8fmv and it seemed to work fine...  If someone can get me past that, the save can be grabbed from http://epoch.jct.ac.il/~issac/save03

I had a similar problem while playing on disc 2 without a full install -
When you don't do a full install, it loads lots of the field files off the disc.  I think part of it was bad on that disc, because it worked fine when I had a full install.
