FF7 - ugly fonts in hardware mode
« on: 2003-10-12 19:25:46 »
I have a weird problem in the hardware mode. You can see it on the screenshots - the fonts are totally screwed up. Do you know what's going on?

I've installed the Riva patch. I have WinXP and GeForce FX 5200 with drivers ver. 45.23.

Please help!

See this:

This applies to all newer nVidia cards as far as I can tell.

It works! Thank you very much. And sorry I didn't search the forums thoroughly enough.
My fault.

I've got some snapshots with fx5600(detonator 45.23). NV31 works fine with ff7pc.
http://www.geocities.com/halo_halox/page_2_1.htm
http://www.geocities.com/halo_halox/page_2_2.htm

You need to download and run "riva tuner".
( Main->Driver settings->Direct3D tweaks->Antialiasing)

Then encheck "Enable antialiasing", "Force antialiasing in all D3D applications", and set Antialiasing method to "2x2".

You also need new ff7config in riva patch. (remember never encheck "nvidia")

Lookin' cool, halohalo. The only problem is in the 2nd picture, v2_1.JPG. Aeris looks like she just got out of eye surgery, but hasn't completely healed yet. Freaky grey eyes.

Speaking of Anti-Aliasing, I discovered probably the best FSAA and Anisotropy levels for FF7. Quincunx for the FSAA, and 8x Anisotropy. Let's take a gander at what the game looks like afterwards.

Picture 1
Picture 2
Picture 3

These screenshots were taken in 32-bit using Ficedula's 32-bit patch. The only strange thing you may notice is the icons of the characters. They are obviously changed, but they look better if you ask me.

Looks great? You just gotta see it in-game.

Well, in fact I prefer v2_1.jpg :D  because Aeris looks pretty cute.

v2_1.jpg and v2_3.jpg are snapshots of voodoo2 (official 3dfx dx7 driver with Mismatched SLI Voodoo2 Driver kit).
nv25_8xS_1.jpg and nv25_8xS_3.jpg are snapshots of gf4ti4600 (with detonator 43.51, 8xS FSAA).
nv31_4523_2x2_1.jpg and nv31_4523_2x2_3.jpg are snapshots of gffx5600 (with detonator 4523, 2x2 FSAA).

"R" means "FF7 Rendition patch".
(I always enable 8bit paletted taxtures support in Detonator)

I might want to try it with 32 bit patch...

On my Ti 4200, I've run 12x AA and 8x AF, and let me tell you, FF7 hasn't looked better...

Still can't completely save it, though :\ someone needs to find a way to increase the resolution to at LEAST 800x600

There are ten different AA methods. They are 2x, QAA, 4x, 4xS, 4x 9-tap, 6x, 8x, 12x, 8xS, and 2x2.

If you use detonator 45.xx (enable 8bit paletted textures support), you should set AA to "2x2" with Riva Tuner.

"8xS" AA and "2x2" AA work great with 43.xx and 44.03.

"12x" AA is useless in 45.xx (or above).

Well, I was sick and freakin' tired of the original icons, so I got some different pictures of the characters which were better, and put them in there. I wasn't able to find any different vincent and yuffie pictures that looked decent, so I kind of quit working on it. However, I'll gladly continue my search for different pictures. And then I'll release the final version.

[EDIT, one hour later]

Speaking of final versions...I just finished up the icons and put them in a nice package. You can get it here.

As for your problem ye-roon, I really can't imagine what the reason could be. It's probably normal for it to do that for awhile, and maybe you'll just have to get used to it being weird like that. So see if you can hack it for awhile... and by "hack it" I don't mean whipping out your trusty hex editor or disassembler. I mean it in the context of:

Slang. To cope with successfully; manage: couldn't hack a second job.

As for the 32-bit patch, it comes bundled with the cetra patcher version 0.20, which can be found at Aaron's wonderful Ficedula mirror.

It looks to me like Ficedula's host is down. I hope it's not permanent.

Speaking of that, Rubicant, for some reason, I can't ever access the server you're hosting all your stuff on. Is there some other place I can check out One Armed Angel and these icons of yours?

Freakin' "A"!!! Thank you for notifying me. I am always having trouble because the damned ISP keeps switching my IP every time I am out with my friends, or at least nowhere available to fix any errors. That really irks me...

Social life...server...social life...server...

gahh!!!

But it is working right now...so now would be a good time to try it.

Nope. I tried it about 10 minutes after you posted that. I can't even get a ping from kucoru.dyndns.org. I've been to other dyndns.org hosted sites before so I don't think that's the issue. It's got to be something to do with my ISP--I've never once been able to access your server (starting with tries about a month ago, I think...)

For purposes of those of you who cannot access my server, I'll place them temporarily on mirex's server for a week's time. Then you're on your own.

Well, as it turns out mirex's trashbin times out when I upload the one-armed angel song, so forget that plan. But the new link for the new icons is there, so you can at least get that. AFAIK you're the only one that has problems with my server. Does it have anything to do with a firewall? Corrupt ISP?

Rubicant: https://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/clients.html
Here are some apps that can update your dyndns account if your IP address changes.  I don't know how well they'll work with your network setup, but it might be worth a try if the IP changing bothers you...

As for people not being able to access your server, I would think its an ISP problem at one end or the other.  Srethron, if you try to ping Rubicant's server, do you get the IP address (currently 209.112.208.163)?  If you don't, it might be a problem with your ISP's DNS server.  If its a problem with dyndns itself, you shouldn't be able to access my site (aaronserv.dyndns.org) or see my avatar.  I can access Rubicant's server fine, so I don't think its a problem on his end.

Rubicant: Thanks, got the icons. Chances are it's the corporate firewall ("corrupt" alright.) It's the best thing I can think of. The only other thing I can think of is if you're running on a non-standard port. I tend to have trouble with that.

Aaron: It's probably a problem on my end. I do get Rubicant's IP when I ping him (but get 100% packet loss.) I've always been able to access your site/load your avatar, and dyndns.org itself loads just fine for me. I can provide ping and/or HTTP traffic logs, but I don't think they will help.
