...you have it configured for Hardware mode, don't you.

Play in Softwaremode.

or

get the TNT patch,  use the FF7config.exe from the patch. Don't check any of the Riva options. Don't  use the FF7.exe from the patch. You'll need the Chocobo patch, too. You can find all the patches at Eidos.

http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqSearchResults.jsp?problemType=5&searchText=&game=79&platform=3

Click the Chocobo Crash link....man, Eidos really screwed with their FAQ pages. It was better before.

Seem like you haven't installed the DirectShow filters which are offered during game installation.

Are you hitting the Windows Key on the Keyboard? I'm always doing it because I have the Left Ctrl Key as the cancel key. Can't get back into FF7.exe either.. have to End the task and start again.

Hmm... When I play with a gamepad and have the screen saver on, sometimes the screen saver interrupts my gameplay if I don't remember to move the mouse every now and then.  Are you using a gamepad?

Are you using FF7Music?  Sometimes it crashes...

You can fix it like this:

1. Maximize your FF7 window. The screen should be black, but the music still keeps playing, right?
2. Press the Menu key on FF7.
3. Press Up and Down, you should hear that sound when the cusor moves.
4. Alt+Tab to the desktop
5. Go to Ff7

Try running the game in compatability mode for windows 98, if you haven't tried it already.

Have you tried reinstalling FF7? Wait, before anyone flames me, i had this problem with the World Map which is the same as sENGzAI's problem. It just flashed an error report at me then closed, so i reinstalled it and volia! it worked nicely.

you know when something on my computer doestn work and i have tried a lot of things to fix it perhaps you should think about trying basic things.. such as Defrag.. Scan for viruses.. Scan for spyware <~~ that is major..

Download spybot search and destroy for spyware its free and really good..

I still to this day havent tried to run VII or VIII on XP so i havent had to deal with any of these issues.. but perhaps its something else in your system that is causing you to have so many problems..

*maybe check windows update.. although that usually causes more problems than fuxes its still a thought..

I'm beginning to wonder just what condition his disks are in....or if it's even a legit copy.

If I remember....I think the minigames are everywhere in the set of disk. There is a copy on all 3 play disks, and the install disk.....and then a copy on the harddrive. But I have no idea which one the game accesses. Wether ist's the Disks or the Harddrive.
Anyway what I'm getting at, is if it is a corrupt file. There are plenty disks to try copies of...that is if the game is using the minigame from the Harddrive.

Maybe you should try the minimum install?

Its a known problem, FFVII always crashes sometime when you're using WinXP on Win98 it works a lort better, i have Win98 and it almost never crashes, but ofcourse its not an option to downgrade or something so youll have to make your way with patches.
