Gondola crash (like observatory)
« on: 2004-01-01 23:31:58 »
Well i realize a thread was made ages ago like this and no one answered him (sad) ..BUT i have ran into the same problem , cept i have tifa on the gondola instead of aeris(not that it should affect it). Anyway it is alot like the observatory crash, something i spent lots of time trying to fix and i couldnt so i got the help of someone generous enough to help me through it (Threesixty aka Rangor at Eidos forums [thanks]). Anyway does anyone have anything to say about this little bugger? Well if no one can find the solution i once again (hate doing this) ask if someone would help me through this part (although i want to know what tifa says to cloud.......>.<)
My email is   [email protected]
My save game is at    http://myweb.cableone.net/jezz/save07.ff7

[ps On that game, if i try to exit out of golden saucer, blah blah, go to hotel, blah blah, tifa comes into your room..blah...o.O ..ahem ..do the play thing..blah...THEN the gondola where it crashes after tifa says "Aeris would probably be able to just say it but..." and then freezes there (#*&@) .]

Well, at that point, a movie plays, and text is super-imposed on the top of it.  What this has in common with the observotory is it too is a movie where text is shown.  There's only one other movie I know of like this: When Cloud is talking about nibelhiem, it does a pan-around of Mount Nibel, and Cloud starts talkin about it.  But it seems as though you've gotten past that part okay *shrug*

Suggestion: put the FMVs from all three disks in your ff7 directory (or anywhere on your hard disk is fine,a s long as they're ALL in ONE place).  Then edit your registry as such:

find HKey_Local_Machine\Software\SquareSoft, inc\Final Fantasy 7  and change the "Movies path" vaue to where ever it is you plopped the movies (I suggest *your ff7 directory*\movies, but whatever, you don't even need them on the same DRIVE, just as long as you point the regestry key in the right place, it'll work).

Try again.  It could be that your cd drive is being a bottleneck, and it needs to read the movies from a faster place.

And even if this doesn't solve your problem, it's better having it this way, because you don't have to wait for movie load times ^_^

Lemme know if this solves your problem =)

If you just want to know what they say, fire up Cosmo and view all the text in ghotin_2, gldgate, astage_a, astage_b, bigwheel, bwhlin, and chorace2 (in that order.)
Some of it won't be in order (since they revisit some of those scenes in between the drama) and you'll miss some videos, but it's better than nothing.

IIRC, technically, it's a succession of movies, interspersed throughout the bwhlin conversation:
gold2.avi
gold3.avi
gold4.avi
gold5.avi
gold6.avi
gold7.avi
gold7_2.avi (in that order)

Another one of the mysteries of FF7 and Crash to Desktop.  I'm starting to wonder, if these crashes are like the Chocobo Crash....

The Chocobo Crash would happen because it accessed a part of RAM that is reserved strictly for Windows....but at the time that reserved memory wasn't being used by Windows98. Then when the newer versions of Windows came to the scene....the conflict started happening. Eventually someone figured it out..... Jedwin(sp?)....and a patch was released.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe these Crashes are in conflict with something else.....It has to be something that not everyone has, but is still fairly common, maybe its an optional function of windows, or some other TSR program, or maybe it's related to the Soundcard, it has to be something that can't be disabled by System Manager, something that is part of a driver or something.

Oh well, I don't know enough about computers to do anything.

Try changing the Sound Acceleration to Basic mode.....it in a program called Dxdiag.exe

-------
Boy...I haven't helped anyone with a save game in, like, 6 months or something.....I guess you put the game down for a long time, since then.

loganno1, you can pick up your save file here:

http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/rasczak77

It's inside the Final Fantasy Depot folder and has been renamed to save00.jpg for applicable reasons.

You'll need to use "Save Target As..." and rename it to  save00.ff7

Unless my PC starts doing it.... I don't think I'll ever find the workaround. Although it's been a while since I tried it. I just upgraded my videocard to a Geforce FX 5900xt. I bet you FF7 get's messed up because of it.

Don't forget to find a script file to see what they said...

I had the problem on an old machine, since retired. The specs were as follows:
Pentium 133
48MB RAM
Windows 95
DirectX 6.1
4X CD Drive
No graphics accellerator card

At the time, the game was still somewhat new, and a Square rep actually mailed me a save file.

Later, I upgraded to DirectX 7 and started having sound troubles--sounds had a weird reverb effect and would play a couple seconds later than they should have. I ended up manually copying DirectX 5 files from my FF7 Install Disc and overwriting DirectX 7 file I could. In the end, my machine still registered that is was DirectX 7, but it was pretty much DirectX 5.
I didn't really change my system config after that (except the 4X CD Drive died at some point--don't remember if this was before or after--and got replaced with a 2X.) I ended up playing through the game again, and didn't have a problem playing through Cosmo Canyon that time, or any time after.
Go figure.

I too had the Cosmo Canyon crash back when I was just using a Diamond Viper V330 card.  It went away as soon as I added a Monster 3D II card on an adjacent PCI slot.  With that I had assumed my computer wasn't originally powerful enough to run the game but I'm not so sure of anything now that people are having the same problem when they're using Pentium IVs and Radeon 9800s  :-?

iirc there was one time in this forum that there was some agreement placed on the perfect system to run that game.. I think didnt it have a

Voodoo3 GFX card?

I cant remember much about what was decided upon but legacy systems would be much better to run ff7 on because that was what it was made for.. Then again.. we dont want to leave our beloved games behind as we burn through technology to newer better systems out there..

yeah, i used to have a voodoo 3 2000, the game ran ok on that card.. sometimes a movie would hang, but playing the fmv in wondows a few times first would clear up any issues (the movie had to be in memory to work, basically).

I'm starting to wonder if the people at Eidos put any effort into the port whatsoever.
