the problem is that  my sounds crackle and the when fighting the game is extremly slow :[[

now i have tried every patch i can find with no solution so far :[[[

I'll bet he's talking about 7, I don't have the sound crackle, but I do have EXTREMELY poor video in the battle sequence.  Now here's the kicker...

"Poor" FF7 System:
WinXP Pro
P4 1.7GHz
640 MB PC-800 RDRAM
GeForce3 64MB
SB Audigy Platinum

Now, I do have an older system too, which runs the game flawlessly and at ultra-high speed...

"Killer" FF7 System:
WinXP Pro
Celeron 433MHz
128MB PC-100 SDRAM
Voodoo3 3000 PCI 16MB
Crystal Semiconductor Sound (Hewlett Packard Stock)

Both copies have the XP patch installed.
By all logic the system above should CREAM the system below, but such is not the case.  I've tried enabling the nVidia fix RIVA and TNT on my newer system. (neither work and it just crashes out)  And things like the travel screen, world map, bike race, etc. run flawlessly, in fact, they run too fast, almost, to keep up with!  But as soon as you're in battle... *chug chug chug* ~12 FPS I've tried so many things, patches, configurations, etc.  But so far the only thing that's made a difference is me moving my save game to my old computer!  I'd really love to be able to play it on my newer computer, but I'm fresh outta' ideas.  Anyone?

To use the Riva/TNT patch on newer nVidia graphics cards with newer drivers, you have to use RivaTuner to disable 8-bit Palleted Textures.  Otherwise, it'll just crash.

I tried downloading RivaTuner and disabling 8-Bit Palleted textures, sure enough, it fails the test, so I enable nVidia TNT, horribly messed up color, non-3d things (i.e. background pre-rendered areas) not appearing, and still terrible video performance in battle.  So I exit, try the Riva checkbox, same result.  Exit, try software rendering, and as usual, it's been the most solid performer, with perfect text, and better battle performance.  Still not where it should be on a 1.7GHz system, but still better than D3D.  Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Again, I'm using a nVidia GeForce3.
I've tried standard Detonator AND Omega drivers.  Same results.  And it's pissing me off that I can run America's Army and Need For Speed Underground in high detail, but get 10-13FPS in FF7... lol

Ok, I dl'ed the newest official drivers from nVidia, disabled 8-bit palleted with RivaTuner, started up FF7...  The text looked normal!  I was thrilled! Unfortunately, this is all it fixed...  No more gunky text, but battle rendering still slow as hell. :-? wtf...  This is absolutely maddening...

Hi!

I think the problem is DirectX. I remember I had that problem a while back. It was with DirectX 9.0a, but the upgrade to DirectX 9.0b fixed the problem. Try upgrading DirectX and see what happens...  :D

Alternatively, you can see if you can degrade to DirectX 8.0 or 8.1 if you want... although upgrading is probably the better option as you probably may have DirectX 9.0 installed from a fairly new game that needs it...  :wink:

In my experience, DirectX 9 hasn't broken anything, so upgrading to it shouldn't hurt you.  I had one game that refused to run ("This game requires DirectX 8.1 or newer" it said), but a patch was immediately available...

the direct x thing worked, but since the slowdowns accured with dx9.0b i just downgraded to 8.0 now the fights are smooth (phew)

Nope...  DirectX isn't the problem either apparently...
And now I'm fresh outta' ideas...  Short of just continuing
to play it on my 5 year old computer, which runs it just fine...

I'm curious as to what you did with DirectX... did you try to upgrade it or degrade it? Degrading to DirectX 8.1 from DirectX 9 doesn't work very well as Windows doesn't like you doing that for some reason.  :-?

I didn't know directX could be degraded ?_?  I mean, you can add components from directx5 (which ff7 requires), but 9 will already have those, and short of reinstalling windows, i thought it was near impossible to get rid of directx?

Anyway....

Mara, you didn't happen to install the ff7 soundfont, and forget to install the movieplayer, did ya?  I know some sound corruption can happen with ff7's default SF and most audio cards made after 2001 (I had a conflict error between the SF and my SB Live, which made my comp take 10 minutes to load windows.  Sound wasn't much better, either.)

Is ff7 config recognizing your 3d hardware?  It sounds like your system is too good for ff7 and doesnt like it =P

Alternatly, you could run diaxdiag and see if theres any problems there.  Especially if some of your other game might not be performing as well as they should.

its very difficult to perform, but it is possible to downgrade directx, impossible if that version u are trying to downgrade is your operating systems default directx version.
use to be a standard practise back in directx6 days, directx6 was aflop

well, if it is the music that is crackling, right-click on softsynth tray icon and then left click on SoftSynthesizer Setup.  In the properties window click on the Detailed Settings 1/2 tab, then go to the Direct Sound portion and click on the 'On' radio button.  Or you could alternatively mess with the quality settings. Your computer also seems up to par so, crank the maximum CPU usage up to 90%.  Though it should never use that much CPU power, this will help the processing of the XG controllers go much faster. After that, click on Detailed Settings 2/2 and select you direct sound device, which is most likely your sound blaster card.  Put the Respnse Time to slow. This will buffer the sound and there shouldn't be any more crackin'.  The only sound card that I know of that can have max settings with the response time to the fastest level is the good ol' Diamond Monster Sound MX300 with the actual Diamond Monster Sound Drviers.
