FF8Configurator on Windows98
« on: 2024-12-30 04:46:29 »
So, long shot that anyone is still around from the dark ages and will know how to fix this, but I figure I'll give it a shot anyway.  I'm trying to play FF8 on my vintage pc (running windows98).  I want to use FF8Configurator v 2.0 because it lets me change the music device to use MIDI music like FF7 does (I've got a Roland Sound Canvas so I want to use that).  But, when using FF8Configurator I can't change my video device to use my Voodoo2 card.  The ATI Radeon in this PC doesn't support 8-bit Paletted Textures (I'm sure there's a patch, but I want to use the Voodoo 2 anyway since the performance with the Radeon is abysmal).

Using the stock config tool I can select the Voodoo without issue, and it works well.  But, selecting the Voodoo in the graphics tab of FF8Configurator doesn't seem to save to the config.ini.  When I launch either the game or the config tool again it has reset to "Primary Display Driver" (aka the Radeon).

So, long story short, does anyone know a way to either: a) make the ff8configurator actually use my Voodoo card or b) another way to use MIDI music with the stock config tool.

Thanks!

Okay, so for anyone else in the same situation: the older 1.0 version of ff8conf only changes the MIDI settings.  So if you’re happy with the graphical settings from the stock config tool, you can use the 1.0 version to just change your MIDI device (on Windows 9x).  You have to re-run the MIDI settings every time you change something in the default config tool since it will overwrite the 3rd party settings, but that’s a minor annoyance.
