Dude, it's been pretty much established that the XP patch is the same thing as the 1.02 patch plus Qhimm/Jedwin's Chocobo patch, except the XP patch doesn't give credit to the people who actually did the work, and it replaces your GM.DLS file without telling you.

Quote
-FF7config.exe is replaced with one dated 06/05/2002 size 448000, file compare shows that the ONLY difference is that the string "1.02" has been replaced with "XP" so basically it's the identical eidos 1.02 file

Quote
The patched FF7.exe is identical to the FF7 chocobo patch, yet I don't recall any credit given to jedwin...

Anyway, maybe if you gave us more info on what exactly the symptoms of the problem are, then we could help you.  If you are using Windows XP, did you try pressing "F8" at startup and using the "Last known good configuration?"  Can you get into Safe Mode?  Have you tried doing a recovery installation using your Windows XP installation disc?

Or is your hard drive actually broken?  (Sorry, there's no way that FF7 could do that.)

Yeah, at one time FFVII screwed up my bit torrent bad. No only was my bit torrent gone, but it also screwed up DX8.1 and I couldn't reinstall it.

It looks like Windows XP doesn't allow older applications to "accidentally" directly access the disk.  I don't think this protection is absolute, though, because then you couldn't have utilities like Partition Magic.  Still, it's hard to imagine FF7 causing any damage to the disk's file system or anything.

Head crash maybe?
Or maybe ScanDisk screwed it up? It can do that, you know...

Playing FFVII with 1.02. Then the game crashed. Windows become frozen. Then i restarted the computer. Then... nothing.

WinXp always restart. Only shows WinXp Proffesional, the loading bar, and then, the computer restart. I cannot see that HD from other PC. I tried using all F8 options, but always the pc restart at WinXp loading screen.

But using a MSDOS rescue disk, i can see the files.

:(

The computer is 8 months old. Also i always im using a SAI...

A couple things you can try.  You'll need your Windows XP CD-ROM.

1. Boot off of the Windows XP CD-ROM.  When it gives you some options, press Enter (to install Windows) and F8 (to accept the licence agreement).  It should search for previous Windows installations, and give you the option to attempt a recovery install on one of them.  Try this.

2. If the recovery install doesn't work, or if Windows setup doesn't detect your previous installation, then proceed with the setup (do NOT format your hard drive) and install Windows into a different folder if you can.  Then, when the setup is complete, you should be able to see your files still on the drive and maybe even attempt to repair your previous installation.

If you can see the files from an MS-DOS disk, you must be using FAT32.  I can't really think of very many good reasons to use FAT32 with Windows XP, but some computers still come with that file system.  Maybe you should consider upgrading to NTFS...

Heh, that is one of the good reasons to use FAT32. :P
I did that myself for a while, and even after I dropped my Win98 installation, it took some pushing to get me to move to NTFS... but if you don't need FAT32 for backwards compatibility, NTFS offers per-file/folder security settings and generally doesn't need to be checked after a crash.

Anyway, let us know how it goes...

No. FF8 has far less issues with XP than Ff7.  Probably 'cause ff7 uses an old assed bastardized version of Direct Draw(Which you must install to get the blaseted thing to work), whereas ff8 doesn't need it.  FF8 is also laptop friendly unpatched. ^_^

God know how many files are lost to ScanDisk.

Windows NT (Networking Trouble)
Windows 95 (wow that GUI looks familiar...)
Windows 98 my data!!! (it does if it shuts down to fast)
Windows ME (More Errors)
Windows 2000 (number of programs that you'll have trouble running)
Windows XP (eXperience Problems)

Sorry if I pissed off any Windows-lovers. :P

Unfortunately, I am stuck with Windows. I installed FreeBSD and I can't get the bootloader on! Doh!

Does anyone know what to do? Will GNU/Grub work?

I actually thought of trying Linux.. Maybe Gentoo.. But if i ever did that i realized that i am going to have to get a new computer so i can put it on my old one or now current one.. As of right now it seems that you need windows to run most things .. I dont have the power to mess with emulators and what not so i am sticking with XP Pro.. and really i dont have problems with it..

about hd crashes.. That scares me.. I would probably cry if one of my drives crashed.. I really need to back up..

hey jari, i've had the same problems with my old motherboard! it would kill any drive attached to it except the hard disk. i went through about 5 floppy drives, 3 cdrw drives, and 4 dvd drives. then i got super pissed and sent it to the dreaded closet of no return! (the closet of no return is my old bedroom that is filled to the absolute edge with stuff that i don't use anymore.) i now own a much better computer that i have referred to in my last few posts.
