Evidently he liked Elton John, so he started learning piano at age 12. Good musician, I must say.

i read in an interview that he only played keyboards and guitars, never was schooled in music, and hadn't composed a note until Final Fantasy...

you could say he was a bit lucky, and fortunately mad talented
