Crashes at startup...

Alright before you bitch about searching through the forums first, I have spent atleast 2 1/2 hours searching through THIS forum and I cannot find SHIT.

I read through "The FF7 FAQ" and none of that helped me.

I have seen posts like this before but they where ended with whining about searching through the forums first.  I'll tell you what; you search them for me.

Now that thats over, I'll explain my problem for anyone interested.

I have a downloaded version of FF7, so the cinematics where ripped. (My CD is trashed, it's not even readable)

Code: [Select]
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 (2600.xpsp2.030422-1633)
           Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: VIA Technologies, Inc.
       System Model: KT400-8235
               BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
          Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+,  MMX,  3DNow, ~1.5GHz
             Memory: 256MB RAM
Page File: 175MB used, 443MB available
        Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
     DxDiag Version: 5.03.0001.0902 32bit Unicode

           System specs taken from dxdiag

Anyway, When I run the file (which is cracked for nocd) it runs the game, and I see "New Game" or "Continue"  I select "New Game" and it fades to a black screen, where it just sits there.

I see that it is a some-what common problem but I have never seen it resolved or explained how it was resolved, but rather "I fixed it, but I wont explain how"

Anyway, I thank you for anyone that replies with something other than "OMG SPAMMER YOU ASKED A QUESTION THAT WAS ASKED 3 YEARS AGO YOU SHOULDVE SEARCHED", and yes I seem like an ass but I would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Ok, first and foremost, downlaod the upside down video patch from eidos's site if you havn't already.

Second, make sure you dont hve any codec pcks isntalled: some video codecs conflict with the codecs ff7 needs to run.

Third, go into your registrey and make sure that the "moviepath" is pointed to where the movies are installed on your disk

Fourth, make sure you have the CORRECT movies.  For starters, make sure you have "opening.avi" and that it's a 25,973 kb file.  If it's not that size, it WONT PLAY.  FF7 is VERY picky about what types of files it plays.

outside of those tips, *shrugs*

Actually, Emperorsteele, that's not 100% accurate. If his avi files are messed up, he can actually try playing a very short avi file that is in the correct format. I just replaced mk8.avi (the explosion of the bomb at the beginning of the game) which is like 3 seconds as the opening.avi, and the game still started out fine. Since he DID bootleg the game, we can't exactly legally help him as of now, such as replacing his files for him. We could link him to a dummy .avi file that he could replace bad ones with.

But yeah...sounds good...

Well, thank you for trying to help but it still doesnt work past the 'new game' selection.

I ran opening.avi in g-spot (a program that checks AVIs) and these are the results.

Code: [Select]
Size: 3.00 kb (3,072 bytes)
Stat: File Length Correct
Type: AVI

CODEC

4cc:    DIB (_RGB)
Name: BI_RGB Raw Bitmap
[no codec needed]

Runtime: 00:00:02 (31 fr)
xy: 1x1 (1.00:1)[=1:1]
bitrate: 1kb/s
FPS: 15
Qf: 97.032 bits/pixel

No Audio Channels

If they are invalid, could you please link me to an AVI file that would work in place of it?

Thanks

I'm sorry maybe you misunderstood: I own the game, I bought it.  I didnt buy just the CD, I bought the rights to play it.  My CD is gone (and trust me, it's not in the hands of anyone else) but I believe I should still be able to play the game.

and yes darkdevil I'm sorry for getting upset but when I spend 4 hours trying to get anything to work I get frustrated.  I searched through this forum for about half of that time and the other half spent in google finding this forum.  So, I apologize for being like that and I hope you understand why I was frustrated.

fixed

dumbest problem... I checked the registry a bunch of times, thought it was right.

I copied and pasted the folders into a window to see if it was 100% correct, well it turns out that inc. (squaresoft folder) had a dot infront of it in the registry and not in the directory.

Stupid, really.  Thanks for all of your trouble, and I apologize for such a dumb error.
