I got FFNx to work on the GOG version
« on: 2026-02-24 21:59:07 »
Hello,

I figured out how to use FFNx with the GOG version just released. This will work on the new 2026 Steam version with an extra step.

To get FFNx working do the following:
1. Find your GOG FF7 Download folder. For me it is C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII
2. In this folder go to ff7\resources\ff7_1.02
3. Make a copy of ff7_en and rename it ff7_en.exe.
4. Move the new ff7_en.exe file into the ff7\workingdir folder.
5. Go download the latest version of FFNX off of GitHub. Use the Steam version.
6. Unzip FFNX into the ff7\workingdir folder you put the executable in.
7. [Steam Only] - Create a file called steam_appid.txt in your ff7\workingdir folder. Inside of it paste/type just the number 3837340.
8. Running the ff7_en.exe file should show the FFNX logo when it starts.

From here you can modify the FFNx.toml file and add mods. Everything works perfectly, you can override the window size, get 60fps, widescreen, everything. In my case I had some mods setup to work outside of 7th Heaven using the "direct" folder and these worked perfectly when extracted to the ff7\workingdir folder as well. This includes the background textures and movies too.

There are a couple of issues. Any cloud saves probably won't work since you are running a different executable. Also, some of the text is misaligned. This may be due to the new button text they put in. It happens to me with no mods, so it must be something in this new version.

Also, when you run the new Steam version this way it will load saves from the older 2013 Steam version.

The GOG version will run without Steam or GOG Galaxy running, but the Steam version will not start unless Steam is running. It will error out otherwise. So it appears the GOG version is truly DRM free, where the new 2026 Steam version still requires Steam.

Thanks to everyone who made all these awesome mods.

After a bit more testing I figured out that the new version has modified window.bin, which causes the fonts to misalign. I copied window.bin from the Steam 2013 version (data\lang-en\kernel) and moved it into the appropriate place for the GOG version (ff7\workingdir\data\lang-en\kernel). Rename it from WINDOW.BIN to window.bin if you have a case sensitive os. This fixes my text alignment issues. If you don't have a Steam 2013 version to get this file from you can use the one from SYW_Unified, but it's not exactly the same as the Steam 2013 version.
